“I had a pretty good idea, yeah.”

Hayley put her arm around him. “I could have dropped you off,” she said gently.

“Nope. You’d steal my car.”

“I know how you feel about wheelchairs, but I wouldn’t—”

“We’d be stuck with crummy seats.” His tone turned apologetic when she didn’t reply. “I know you wouldn’t care,” he said. “But I wanted to walk with you.”

She stopped. “So walk with me.”

“Isn’t that what we’re doing?”

“Nope,” she said. “You’re just walking next to me. Take a breath. Look around.”

He sighed. “You’re just trying to slow me down.”

“You bet your cute little ass.” She leaned closer. “Wanna know a secret?”

Nick nodded, and she kissed his cheek.

“I’m having a really good time,” she whispered. “And I want to make it last.”

He slowed down for her then, and she still had her arm around him when they walked into the theater’s lobby.

“Look at this place,” Hayley said. “This is amazing.”

Nick grinned. “Do they not have theaters in Indianapolis?”

“Of course they do, but that doesn’t take anything away from this one.” Hayley caught sight of a woman who’d just entered the theater.

A royal-blue dress was slit all the way up the woman’s long legs, and she sized Hayley up with a smile that never reached her eyes. Then, as Nick nodded to her amiably, her gaze flitted over him like he didn’t exist.

“How often do you get that look?” Hayley asked him.

“Her?” Nick looked surprised, then a little embarrassed. “More often than you’d think.”

“That bitch.”

He laughed. “At least wait to attack her until after the movie, okay?”

Hayley seethed. “She didn’t evenseeyou!”

“Who cares? I’m with you.”

Hayley stopped staring at her new nemesis as his words sunk in. “Aww,” she said. “You wouldn’t rather be with Miss Legs over there?”

“Come on,” he scoffed. “Too young, too mean, too tall, and probably not all that bright.”

She laughed. “Good answer.”

“I know you want to make out during the movie,” he said once they’d gotten seats, “but I’d really like to watch the film, if you don’t mind.”

Hayley kept reading her program. “Idiot.”

“I’m just saying, it’s not every day you get to see a cinematic gem in this sort of setting, so if you absolutely must suck face, we should do it now.”

Hayley bit back a laugh. “Suck face. Wow.” She slapped down her program. “Am I not worth your best material, Freeman?”
