He grinned. “Well, if the easy stuff works …”
“Go on,” she demanded. “Lay it on me. Now.”
“You want my best stuff.”
“Unless I’m about to be disappointed.” Nick got a faraway look in his eyes. “What?” she said. “What is it?”
“Hmm?” He blinked, came back to her. “Nothing. It’s silly.”
“Sillier than sucking face?” He looked a little sheepish, and her smile turned tender. “C’mon,” she said gently. “You can tell me.”
Nick glanced around them, then beckoned her closer. “I was just thinking about my legs.”
“Nick.” She thought about Charlie the dog, the walk from the car, the girl in the lobby. “I never should’ve …”
“Seeing you come down those steps,” he said. “You were breathtaking. The way the sun glinted in your hair and off your skin …” He trailed his fingers across her shoulder, brushing her hair away from her neck. “You sounded so happy to see me, and I just wanted to touch you.”
She swallowed. “Yeah?”
He nodded. “I loved having you so close, messing with my tie, smelling so good. And then you ran your tongue along your lip while you concentrated on the knot, and all I could think of was how those lips were going to taste.” He smiled. “I have allfive senses, and I know you fit perfectly in my arms. So what the hell do I even need my legs for?”
Hayley forgot to breathe. “You don’t.”
“Wanna know a secret?”
She nodded, and bit her lip to stop a gasp as he kissed her neck.
“My best material,” he whispered, “only works when it’s true.”
Hayley’s mouth dropped open.
Nick sat back and calmly opened his program. “Disappointed?”
“I hate you,” she said.
He smiled. “I don’t think you do.”
When they were almost to her place, she asked, “So, did you like it?”
“Absolutely,” he said cheerfully.
“What was your favorite part?”
“Watching you enjoy it.”
He parked the car, and she stopped him from opening his door.
“I’ll come to you,” she said.
Nick was standing with one hand firmly on the inner handle of the open door by the time she circled the car to stand in front of him.
“So,” she said.
He looked into her eyes. “So.”
“This was fun.”
“Absolutely.”
