One great bigHOORAH!that made him smile.

After that, he went to the office and worked through the morning, then made himself a sandwich. It was midafternoon when he heard the front door open and got up to see if his mom needed help carryinganything in, then stopped, stunned by his mother’s transformation.

“Mom. Oh my God! I hope you feel as good as you look, because you look beautiful.”

Shirley beamed. “I feel like a million dollars, and look at my nails! Pink with silver sparkles.”

Sean pointed to the sofa. “FedEx brought you a package. It’s from B.J..”

She took off her coat and sat down to open the package, then frowned. “I don’t want to break a nail. Will you open it for me?” she asked.

“Sure thing,” he said, pulled out his pocketknife and sat down beside her. He had the package open in seconds. “Here you go.”

Shirley removed the lid, peeled back the layers of tissue paper, and then smiled. “What a beautiful scarf! Turquoise and gold. I’m wearing this to church on Sunday.”

“I hope it’s not the only thing you’re wearing,” Sean said.

Shirley swatted him on the arm. “You are so bad.”

He laughed. “There’s a card with it.”

Shirley found the card beneath the folds and opened it.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Mom.

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but I couldn’t love you more. Hope to see you soon.

B.J.

Shirley laid the card against her heart. “Love my boys,” she said, and laid everything back in the box to take to her room.

“There’s more in the kitchen,” Sean said.

Her eyes widened. “From you?”

He nodded.

She headed to the kitchen, then clapped her hands when she saw what was on the island.

“Oh, Sean! Pink roses! You know they’re my favorites! Thank you!” Then she saw the candy. “Divinity!” she said, and immediately chose a piece and took a bite. “Ummm, every bit as good as it looks.” She was still smiling as she opened the card. The smile froze, and then her chin began to quiver.

He’d signed it,

To the first woman I ever loved.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Mom.

from son #2

He hugged her. “Don’t cry. This is a happy day for me. I’m proposing to Amalie tonight.”

Shirley looked up and, in that instant, saw him as the man he had become, and not just her son.

“Oh, honey! No more tears, I promise! I am happy for the both of you, and happy for me, too. I’m gaining a daughter for this house. You are such a dark horse. I didn’t even know you’d gone ring shopping.”

“I looked online for ages, and in the end, it was an antique set that won me over.”

“I’m so excited! I can’t wait to see it on her finger!”
