“Me either,” he said, and then glanced at the clock. “I’m going to bring up some wood for the fireplace, and yes, I’m using the wheelbarrow. Now go sit somewhere and be pretty until it’s time to change into your fancy duds.”

“Yes, okay, I will.”

“When is Wiley coming to pick you up?” he asked.

“Around six thirty. He’s taking me to Hotel Devon,” she said.

He nodded. “I’m going to get firewood. Be right back.”

She patted his cheek, then poured herself a cup of coffee and sat down at the table to finish off her piece of candy as Sean went out the door.

Amalie had a dress she’d been saving for a very special occasion, and this was the perfect time to wear it. It was the ultimate little black dress, and she hoped her black Natori lace tights had enough design to hide the burn scars running up the side of her left leg, because there sure wasn’t enough dress to do it. But once she had it on, and the black lacy tights, she felt confident enough to pull off the look and was dressed and waiting when the church bells chimed.

Her heart skipped! Sean was here!

She smoothed down the fabric on the front of her dress and headed for the door, her high heels clicking on the tile in the entry as she went, wondering why he hadn’t used his key.

Then she opened the door.

He had flowers in one hand, and a box of candy in the other, black suit, white dress shirt, and a devil-may-care smile on his face that stopped her heart.

Sean had thought he was ready for her and all that went with her, until he saw her in that dress. She had legs that went all the way to a hot Saturday night, in a dress that barely made it to Tuesday. It zipped all the way up the back to the mandarin-style collar, then shot demure all to hell with a heart-shaped cutout above her breasts that left nothing to the imagination.

“Holy…Lord, Amalie, you look like you just came off a runway! Beautiful, absolutely beautiful,” he said, and leaned across the bouquet and kissed her.

“Thank you, darling. You look pretty smashing yourself. Come in out of the cold.”

“These are for you,” he said, and handed her the flowers.

“I want to put them in water before we leave,” she said, taking a vase from a shelf in the living room before going to the kitchen. As soon as she had them in water, she looked up. “Look how beautiful!” she said, fingering the red roses’ petals.

“I see,” Sean said, but he was looking at her. “These are for you, too.”

“Ooh, chocolate. I’m saving those for later.” She opened the card and read the words as they blurred on the page.

My girl forever… Love you more.

Sean

“Oh, Sean, you are going to spoil me, aren’t you?”

“Absolutely rotten,” he said. “But I’m not done.” Then he reached for her hands, took a deep breath, and dropped down on one knee. “This has been coming since the day we swore a blood oath, but I was too young to see the ending. Finding you again has been the blessing of my life. I love you, Amalie, to the depths of my soul. I can’t see my life without you in it. Will you marry me? Will you be my wife?”

Amalie was trembling and crying and nodding all the way through every word he said, and the moment he paused…she started laughing.

“Yes! Yes! A thousand times, yes!”

He took the ring out of his pocket, still anxious it wouldn’t fit, but then Ella was right. It slipped on as if it had been made for her.

Amalie saw the ring and gasped. “Sean! Oh my God!” She looked up at him then. “It’s the most perfect thing I’ve ever seen! How did you know?”

He stood, touching her cheek and then the ring, and then brushing a soft kiss across her lips.

“I wasn’t sure… It’s an antique… The sapphire is the color of your eyes, and I—”

She closed her eyes. “Ella gave this to you. There’s a band that goes with it. The word FOREVERis engraved inside.” Tears were rolling.

“If it makes you sad, I can—”
