“The contents of this box will do it. Special Agent Glen Tiller is who I’d go to. I’m assuming no one has corrupted the fraud department, but at this rate, who knows.”

They spent the next hour going through the evidence Randy had brilliantly amassed. They’d be able to nail all three men, but Deckard was personally going to pay Mitch a visit.

SIXTY-THREE

CHRISTIAN ANDANDI EXITEDthe Trent Gallery in Phoenix.

“Well, that felt like a waste of time,” she said.

“At least they were polite, but given the circumstances, I can’t see them keeping us in the loop. I’m an out-of-state PI, and your company doesn’t insure the gallery.”

“I know. It wasn’t on our list, which makes me nervous,” she said as they made their way across the large parking lot to their rental car.

“We don’t know how to track them now that they aren’t falling into any of the categories we made.”

“True, but I’d say we’re still playing a game,” he said, his muscles stiffening as he scanned the parking lot.

“What?”

He gestured to the car—to the note made out to Andi on the dash.

“You locked the car, right?” she asked.

He nodded. “A car lock isn’t much of a deterrent to art thieves.”

“True,” she said. “You have gloves?”

“Not in the rental car. I better grab one of the officers. They’ll need to take the letter as evidence anyway.”

“Agreed.”

“Actually, why don’t you head in. I’ll keep watch out here.”

She scanned the area. “You think they’re watching?”

“Given the hairs on the nape of my neck standing up, as clichéas that sounds, I’d say yes.” There were two office buildings across the way. They could be in either one of them. “Let’s both go in.”

“Okay.” She nodded.

He rested his hand on her lower back, and they reentered the building. Grabbing Officer Trujillo, they headed back outside.

Officer Trujillo slipped on his gloves, lifted and then opened the letter. He stepped back so both Andi and Christian could read what it said.

It Can Be Cruel,Poetic,Or Blind. But When It’s Denied, It’s Violence You May Find.

“The answer is justice,” Christian said.

“What sense does that make?” the officer said with a shake of his head as he folded up the note. He slipped it into the envelope and then slid the envelope into an evidence bag. “You two be careful. Safe travels home.”

“Oh, we’re basing here for a few days.”

Trujillo’s brow arched. “Oh?”

“They hit multiple galleries in New Mexico.” It would have been three if they hadn’t staked out Tad’s Taos gallery. It just hit him—Tad must have tipped them off. That weasel.

“We have a theory they’ll do the same here,” Andi said.

“That would be a bold move,” Trujillo said. “Bold, but stupid. We’ll have extra coverage on all the galleries in the area. Well, we’ll drive by each on patrol. There are too many in the area to have an officer stationed at each.”
