He shouldn’t even know of my existence. Seriously. It’s the one reminder I’ve never allowed myself to forget. No fantasy can cover up the fact.

I technically screwed his boss over, nothimdirectly. He knows I’m the one who helped another family infiltrate, but that’s it. A girl has to leave her signature, and at the time, I wanted him to know. That’s beside the point.

Yet, there’s a curve on his lips that says otherwise. Through my monitor, he looksexcited.Like a starving lion ready to pounce on his prey after a long day.

Dante is a smart man, and I’m silly for thinking I could make him believe such a lie.

Next thing I know, there’s a thump against my front door, followed by a few matching hard knocks. My skin prickles and my heart tightens in my chest as the sound continues.

The timing can’t be coincidental.Someone has tracked me down.Dante wants me to know he’s the reason. He doesn’t smirk often, only when he’s got the upper hand.

While I scramble for my phone, I silently tell myself that I’m overthinking this little fear of mine.

Maybe it’s one of my neighbors coming to complain about the music I play or a misdelivered package. I’ve had plenty of people mistake my address for others. Sure, I normally ignore those sorts of disruptions, but this time, something doesn’t feel right.

What should I do?

My chair takes a tumble as I move to stand. My phone confirms my fears. The doorbell camera displays some annoyed-looking men. Ones who don’t normally come around establishments like this. Call me judgemental, but I’m not risking it.

“Where is it?” Tossing my phone away to free my hands, I’m digging through one of the countless drawers that contain all the miscellaneous items I never touch when I hear a harsh bang.

I don’t let the sound of my door being kicked down slow my movements. Instead, I find the white USB I’ve marked with a red X for such an occasion. Gripping it tight, I turn back to my computer with a grimace.

Dante is still watching, like he knows what is happening. Even with what I’m about to do, I can’t find the strength to hate him.

With the sound of splintering wood filling the air, I snap out of my stare and look sadly at my tower. After years and years of hacking without ever getting caught, I must’ve slipped up somewhere. Unfortunately, I’ll never get to go back and find the hole in my security.

Moving forward, I plug in the USB and watch the magic work. It takes all but a few seconds before my machine crackles and stutters before everything goes dark.

With nothing but my rapid breaths and sharp piano notes filling the tense air, I get all but two steps away from my deskbefore light floods the room and I see two identical Italian men, a pair of twins. They’re bigger than they were on the camera.

My survival rate is starting to drop, I’m sure of it.

They won’t kill me here, not with the promise of one of my neighbors having already called the cops. No, they’ll take me somewhere secluded, probably.

God, I’ve seen terrible things in my days and I hope whatever happens to me is swift. With that in mind, I offer my hands up and admit defeat. There is no real purpose in putting up a fight, especially when they have already caught me. Not like I stand a chance against one of these men, let alone two.

Somewhere, I slipped up. There’s only one time I ever let my defenses drop, and it’s when I’m watching Dante. Lately, I’ve distracted myself so much with the man that I can’t be surprised that men of the same family have found out my location.

What a shame. I’m going to miss out on all of those enjoyable free minutes I spent watching someone I never stood a chance of meeting in the first place.

If I’m willing and obedient, maybe I’ll survive this mess. Though, that’s looking quite slim right now. Not with how pissed off these men look.

“Unless you want the cops flooding this place in ten minutes, I suggest we get out of here.” Dropping my hands, the rest of my body aches to do the same. Taking in their confusion, I shrug a shoulder. “You don’t want to accidentally let the notorious V escape, do you?”

I’m not being genuine, but my words get them moving. One of the men reaches me first, securing a hand around my arm like a human handcuff. He guides me out and sends a glare at a curious and concerned neighbor.

Thankfully, these twins believe in leaving witnesses behind. At least they don’t kill innocents. Not right now anyway. For all I know, they’ll come back.

I don’t want to think about it. Being responsible for someone’s death isn’t desirable to anyone.

Led into an elevator, I’m squashed between the two. They speak to each other using words I don’t understand to keep me in the unknown. A weakness on my end. With my little obsession, I should’ve gotten a translation book or something. Maybe if they had audio on their cameras, I would be more encouraged.

Instead, I’m feeling like a lost dog being led to the pound to be euthanized. How much longer will I have?

The elevator stops twice and the twins are happy to encourage anyone trying to join us to change their mind with a simple show of the guns planted behind the leather of their belts.

With my pale expression, I’m confident. The cops are definitely on their way. They won’t be here on time, that’s for sure.
