“Instead of making our sweatshirts soft, they were itchy. Real itchy,” Cayenne explains.

“Which is why we took them off.”

“You didn’t have to remove your bras,” the policeman behind me says.

“Of course, we did,” Sage declares. “Once we decided to swim in the river to relieve the itch, we needed to remove all our clothes.”

“What does this story have to do with Saffron?” Mrs. West asks.

“Saffron happened upon us swimming in the river and decided to join in,” Feather says.

Indy groans and covers her face with her hands.

Petal giggles. “She did the best cannonballs.”

“But then the chief of police came and ruined our fun.” Sage glares at the man behind me.

“You shouldn’t have been playing hide and seek when the high school biology class was on a field trip to gather wild herbs,” he responds.

Clove fists her hands at her hips. “How the heck were we supposed to know the high school biology class was in the woods?”

Mrs. West purses her lips at Clove. “Maybe you didn’t know but you didn’t have to jump out of the bushes while you were stark naked and shout peekaboo at them. Poor Kai peed his pants in fright. He’s still afraid to go into the woods.”

“That’s not my fault. If his mother weren’t such a prude, he wouldn’t be scared to see a pair of boobs in real life.”

“This town is awesome,” Gibson whispers.

Jett nods in agreement. “I’m never leaving here.”

“Thank you for your contribution, ladies.” Mrs. West herds the women away.

“Thank you for attending Saffron’s remembrance. The usual manner to end our gathering is to offer food and drink to the deceased. Saffron requested for everyone to meet at the diner to enjoy a celebratory meal in her honor.”

“There’s food?” Fender marches off in the direction of town. Gibson and Jett hurry after him.

“Do you want to stay here awhile?” I ask Indy once everyone has left and we’re alone.

“Can’t. According to Grandma’s very detailed instructions, I should be at the diner to welcome everyone.”

I stand and offer her my hand. “Your chariot awaits.”

“I thought today would be sad, but it hasn’t been. It’s the celebration of her life Grandma wanted.”

Good. I’ve had enough of Indy’s tears to last a lifetime. I’ll hold her whenever she cries but I don’t want her to cry ever again. Her tears slay me.

Indy yawns as she climbs the stairs to the house.

“What a day,” she mumbles.

“I’ve never been to a funeral with karaoke before.”

She giggles as she opens the door. “I can’t believe you got into a fight at my grandma’s funeral.”
