“Derrick, I’m surprised to see you away from the hospital. I figured you’d moved in until Samantha was discharged.” Jacob walked up to his car.

“Those women forced me, and my woman wanted some real food, so what could I do? I’m headed back there now.” If Jacob would leave him alone, anyway.

“I’m keeping an eye on things here, so no worries. You go take care of your woman, and we will make sure club security is managed until you get back.” Jake slapped him on the shoulder.

“I have no doubt the team I have set up will make sure everything is handled in my absence, but I really need to get out of here and deliver this food while it’s still hot.” He wasn’t trying to be rude; he just had a feeling in his gut he needed to get back to the hospital.

“Give her my love.” Jake walked back toward the club.

“Hey, man, I’m not trying to be rude. I just wanna see my girl.” He hoped his friend understood.

“I get it, man. Go get your woman.” He turned back to the club.

Derrick drove to the hospital as quickly as he could.

He went straight to the bank of elevators. As the doors started to close, a hand reached out to stop them.

Lainie and Bridget stood in the elevator.

“Hey, Derrick, it sure didn’t take you long.” Bridget giggled. “But you lasted longer than I thought you would, so I’m proud of you.”

“If you two are down here, who’s with Samantha?” His gut was gnawing at him. He didn’t like this at all.

“She was pretty wiped out after her shower, so we let her rest and came down to the cafeteria. We’re just heading back now.” Lainie’s eyes furrowed. “What’s going on, Derrick?”

The doors opened, and, without responding, he thrust the food he was carrying into Lainie’s hands before taking off at a dead sprint for Samantha’s room.

Slamming the door open, what he saw took years from his life. The same man he had seen on the video taking his woman from him held a pillow over her face. He ran over and pulled him from her bed before drawing back and punching him with all of his strength, knocking him out in one shot.

He then turned back to Samantha and yanked the pillow off her. Her color was slightly gray, and he didn’t see her taking any breaths. She was covered in blood, but he had no clue where it was coming from. “Noooo,” he screamed before giving her breaths.

Lainie wasn’t far behind, and while she was feeling to see if Samantha had a pulse, Lainie punched a button on the wall. “Code blue” was called over the intercom system.

Then the room was full of people, and they were pulling him off of her. He watched the dance of the code team as they assessed her. Lainie spoke softly to him. “She is breathing on her own, but she has opened her surgical wounds and is losing some blood. They’re going to have to take her back to surgery to close the wound again.”

Samantha was breathing on her own.

“Derrick, Sir.” Her whispered voice was enough to break him from his daze, and he went to her bedside as the medical professionals continued to work.

“I’m here, Red.” He grabbed her hand.

“Tell me you made the asshole hurt.” Her voice was weak, but his Red was a vicious little thing.

“He won’t be getting up anytime soon. Don’t worry.” He leaned in and kissed her forehead.

“Sir, we’re going to take her back to the OR to stop the bleeding and close the wound. You can stay here and wait. The surgeon will call the room phone to update you.”

“Which surgeon is on for trauma?” Lainie asked.

“Dr. Spalding has been contacted. It seems he has taken a special interest in this case, and though he isn’t on call, he is on his way. He will be the one operating on Miss Gardner.” The man taking his woman didn’t have a clue.

“Actually, you are speaking to Dr. Gardner, and you will treat her with the respect she has earned in this damn hospital, or I swear you will be dealing with me.” Derrick was over dealing with people and their attitudes. If he needed to, he would just start kicking everyone’s ass until they did what they were supposed to.

A hand grabbed his softly, and he looked down to see Samantha was holding on to him. “They’ll take care of me, it’s okay. You saved me again.” He bent over and kissed her hand before letting go and watching them take his woman again unsure of how she would do.

A police officer walked into the room just as John was stirring, starting to come to. “Hey, Derrick, I hear you left him alive for me.” He jerked John forcefully to his feet before cuffing his arms behind him.

Derrick rolled his eyes at his friend from the force. “Not because I wanted to, that’s for sure. You need to get this asshole out of my sight before I finish the job.”
