Page 32 of Only a Kiss

It seemed cruel to us both to voice something that wouldn’t change where this was going.

“Travis?”Sadie’s voice carried across the foyer.

“Back here in the kitchen,” I called.

Her heels clacked along the floor, getting louder as she got closer, and then in another breath she rounded the corner and my heart clenched in my chest.

Fuck, she was gorgeous.

I walked around the counter, and without any words, I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her tight against my body.My mouth descended on hers, and she wrapped her arms around me, holding me close like she never wanted to let go.I continued kissing her, afraid if I stopped and spoke I might confess the very thing I swore I wouldn’t say out loud to her.How much she meant to me.How much I loved her.I couldn’t—not with the end looming over us.

And this had to end.Soon.Before I lost my mind and whatever shred was left of my conscience.

“I need you,” she whispered urgently against my mouth before frantically kissing me again.

My hands slid down to cup her ass and I lifted her up, her legs wrapping instantly around my waist, and carried her toward my room.It was a slow journey because we couldn’t stop kissing, touching, expressing our desire and need the only way we could. She rocked against me, and I nearly stumbled the last few steps to my bedroom door from the pleasure that shot up my spine.

“Fuck, Sadie.”

We crashed against the wall and I let her grind against me, while I moved my mouth to kiss and suck at her neck.

“Yes,” she panted.

I slid a finger under her panties and into her already slick heat.“Fuck, you’re always ready for me.”

“Yours,” she murmured as bliss streaked across her face.

I hesitated for a second as the word hit me.Did she realize what she’d said?Did she mean it the way I wanted her to?And what if she did?It didn’t change anything.

Her eyes opened and she stared at me, her gaze heavy and weighted with unspoken feelings that had been brewing since this all started.I opened my mouth to speak—to say what, I had no idea—when the front door opened and we both stiffened.

“Dad!”

“Shit,” we both whispered at the same time as we separated and put ourselves back together.

“Go use the bathroom down the hall.I’ve been working on the downstairs one.She won’t question it.”

It sickened me a little with how quick I came up with that lie, and that icky feeling of deception hung over my head as I made my way downstairs without a backward glance at Sadie.

The truth was, Icouldn’tlook at her.If I looked at her, I’d confess everything and blow up my whole life.

I came down the stairs and found Jenna standing at the kitchen counter looking at the spread of food.Thank God I hadn’t made actual plates for Sadie and me.Now it just looked like I was making a lunch spread for multiple people.

“Hey, kiddo.I thought you’d be out with your mom for a lot longer.”I walked around the counter toward the sink and washed my hands—washing Sadie off my fingers—which Jenna didn’t question because I’d done this a million times before cooking or eating. That feeling of deception burrowed deeper, while also moving up to my lungs and suffocating me.

She shot me a look that saidfat fucking chance.“I don’t know why she always insists on going shopping. It’s not even her money—it’s her boyfriend of the month.”She looked at me seriously.“Are you sure she’s my mom, because the older I get the less we have in common.”

I tried to hide my smile.Vanessa used to complain all the time that Jenna was more like me than her.It drove her crazy. She’d always wanted a girly girl, she claimed. What she really wanted was a daughter who was as shallow as she was.Jenna was the least shallow person I knew. She was smart and caring. She was generous with her time and was always there for her friends and family. She was the best thing I’d ever done—my greatest achievement was having raised her as a daughter.

My stomach turned at how I’d betrayed her trust.

I couldn’t do it anymore.

She grabbed a baby carrot and dipped it in ranch, but before she spoke, she gestured out toward the front door.“Hey, is that Sadie’s car out front?”

I opened my mouth to answer, even though I wasn’t sure what to say, when Sadie came around the corner looking fresh as a daisy.“Yep.I came looking for you.Got here just a few minutes before you did and your dad said you were out with your mom.I was just using the bathroom before I was going to head out, but now that you’re here, want to go out for lunch?”

Jenna looked at the spread on the counter and then up at me.“Is Uncle Wyatt coming over?”
