“I get it.”

I smile. “What about you, Miss Journalist?”

She gives me an incredulous glare. “I am not famous.”

“But you write for a national newspaper. That's something special.”

She gives me an endearing look. “Thank you for thinking that. I guess that’s my only claim to fame.”

I think of something that will make her laugh even more. “What about your admiring fans?”

She laughs heartily, bringing her hand to her chest. “I don’t have fans.”

“I beg to differ.” Leaning over the side of the bed, I reach into my duffel bag and pull out the panties I stole from her in Vegas.

She recognizes them straight away when I hold them up, and shock steals the color from her face.

“Oh my God. You took them?” she gasps, then starts laughing harder.

“For a keepsake. So you see, I’m the fan.”

“You are crazy.”

“Crazy for you. Come here, Venus.”

She comes to my lips for a kiss, and I have her again. And again.

I realize I don’t want to stop, and I’ll be fucked when I do.

This thing between us is something I don’t want to turn my back on. Autumn Jakobe is not the kind of woman you keep for a few months. She’s the girl you keep forever.

I’m usually a quick study so I could almost laugh at myself for only just realizing that I fell in love with her from the first moment I saw her.

In Vegas.

The next night I meet with Hunter in the sports bar on Main for a greasy big burger and a few beers.

I had a late training session, and Autumn had some wedding thing she had to be present for.

I thought it would be cool to hang out with Hunter. We haven’t had a chance to talk properly since he dropped the bomb on me about the company, and him and Asher needing to find wives.

“This is my last one before I hit my limit.” Hunter grins, holding up his beer bottle.

“Didn’t you say that last time?” Thank God I’m tonight’s designated driver.

“I did, but I realized I needed another to take the edge off my mind. I’m not ready to face tomorrow yet.”

From tomorrow onwards the pursuit to find Hunter a wife will begin.

It’s times like these when I’m glad I decided to play hockey. I would hate to be in that situation.

“Sorry, man. Is Preston seriously going to pick a wife for you, though?” I would hate that even more.

“He will if I don’t find one for myself.” He takes a swig of his beer.

“Shit. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.”

“As much as I love my father, I can’t give him that kind of power over me. This is a woman who’s going to have ties to me, and he’ll want heirs. The last thing I want is some snobby heiress I can’t stand.”
