"What the hell happened to you, Autumn?" Luc gasps, taking off the scarf.

"I, um..." I try to speak but the words don't come.

Panic fills his eyes then that turns to rage. "These are finger marks on your neck. Someone had their hands on you. Who was it?" The demand in his tone hits me to my core, making my blood feel heavy.

"Luc, I'm okay.”

"Who was it?"

"Luc—"

"Was it Evan?" His voice rises higher with every syllable.

"I..." I stutter and stall, which gives him the answer.

“What happened? Why did he do this to you?”

I can’t answer. Just thinking about the attack sends terror lancing through my soul. I can’t even bring myself to lie or make it seem like I’m as okay as I’m trying to make him believe. I’m not and my silence is screaming my pain.

Luc rests his hands on my shoulders. “Did he try to force himself on you?”

“I got away. Charlotte stopped him.”

“Jesus Christ.” He steps back with his hands already balled into tight fists. "I'm going to make him pay."

“No, Luc. I don’t want you to get in trouble.”

Ignoring my pleas, he marches away. Worry grips me and I follow him out the door and into the foyer.

"Luc, where are you going?"

"You need to go home and rest."

"Luc, please stop. Don’t do anything.”

“Like fuck. I’m sick of not doing anything. Evan needs to pay.”

“Luc.” My voice comes out in an anguished cry. That makes him stop.

“Autumn, go home. I’ll call you in the morning.” A glimpse of the Luc I know peeks through and he touches my cheek. The gesture is too tender for the darkness brewing in his eyes. "Go home, baby. Don't worry about me."

“Of course I’m worried. I don’t want you getting into more trouble for me.”

“You’re mine. I’m not going to stand by and allow anyone to hurt you.”

His hand drops to his side and I watch him leave with worry churning my insides like hot lava. I’ll never get tired of him telling me I’m his but this is the one time it scares me to death.

I know he'll make good on his word to make Evan pay.

Chapter 30

Luc

Evan is inside that bar—Lock's Tavern.

It's a dive in the rough part of the city where you go to pick up loose women, drink cheap beer, and do all sorts of unsavory shit.

I'm sitting in my truck in the parking lot, covered by the shadows of a Willow tree. Evan's car is parked on the opposite side of the bar amongst a few pickups and motorcycles.
