“Somehow, I think things have changed.”

“All I can do is hope.”

There’s a knock on our opened door. We look across the room to find Heath leaning against the doorframe with a cocky smirk on his face.

“Morning, ladies,” he greets us.

“Morning,” I reply. It’s been interesting watching the attraction bloom between him and Zoe, but she’s still playing hard to get.

She’s supposed to be heading out with him to a photo shoot for Sports Illustrated.

“Ready to go cupcake?” He winks at Zoe.

“Pleasedon’t call me that.” She frowns, grabbing her purse.

I bite back a smile. He’s been calling her cupcake since the charity event a few weeks ago when he caught her stealing a cupcake from the chairman’s table.

“But it suits you so well.” He amplifies the cockiness in his smile. “You know if we get there early enough, I’ll let you rub the oil on my chest.”

“You wish.” Zoe cuts me a pained glance, but her cheeks are red. “See you later, Autumn.”

“Have fun.” I smile, to her horror, and she leaves with Heath.

The light humor relaxes me for a few more moments, but when my father appears at the door the tension in my body returns.

Things have moved fast over the last few days but the journey to get there has been horrendous.

I’ve experienced humiliating things no girl shouldeverhave to go through with her father—aka Dad walking in on me having sex. Then there was Evan trying to rape me. All those events arose as a result of my fight to be free of my father’s control.

I hope we can fix what’s broken between us. I miss the simpler days when he might have been strict, but he was just Dad.

“Hey, there,” he speaks first.

“Hi, Dad.” I stand and bring my hands together

“Do you want to talk in here? Or we can go out on the terrace?”

“In here is good. I have the office to myself for a few hours.”

“Alright. That’s fine.”

Dad moves forward and we head over to the breakout area Zoe and I use for brainstorming.

We sit opposite each other on the sofa and I can see the worry settling on Dad’s face.

“How have you been?” he asks.

“I’m fine. What about you?”

“I’m good. The team is doing well.”

“I’ve heard. I’ll be at the game tomorrow night.”

He perks up on hearing that. “That’s great. Will you be joining us?”

“Of course. If you want me to.”

“I would love nothing more.”
