There’s no one outside that I know of, but I prefer to be on the safe side. Charlotte is here with Cole, talking about the wedding with our parents.

When we lived together in our younger years she’d always eavesdrop on me and get me in trouble. I wouldn’t want herhearing something she shouldn’t about the guy Dad warned me away from mere hours ago.

“This is seriously big news.” Zoe brings her hands to her cheeks, her eyes still wide.

“I know.”

“You say that, but I’m not sure you know just how huge this is.”

“Okay, I don’t,” I confess, and she giggles. “Apart from the few things you told me and the stuff Dad said, I know nothing about him.”

She keeps her hands at her cheeks and shakes her head at me.

“I can’t believe you, Autumn.”

“I can’t believe myself either. How could I not have known about him? And what a strange coincidence.”

She perks up. “But it’s a good one. My grandma always said there are no such things as coincidences, especially when it comes to men.”

I frown. “Zoe, your grandma is on her fourth husband.”

“Maybe so, but I take that to mean that while she never gave up on love, she won’t stand for shit either. Grams is also very happy with husband number four, thank you very much.”

I laugh and roll my eyes at her. “Okay, fine. Your grandma wins.”

“What are you going to do?” Curiosity animates her features once more. “It really sucks that your father told you to stay away from him, but I understand why. Things have been seriously bad between them, especially lately. Your father benched Luc after a fight with Asshole Evan, so Luc fought back by going to Vegas.”

I met Asshole Evan earlier at the fundraiser. Dad introduced us briefly and referred to him as his lucky charm from L.A. because he played on the same team Dad used to play for. The instant I got back to Zoe she gave me the truth on him, alongwith the name she’d christened him—Asshole Evan. For the few minutes I spoke to him I definitely picked up on the asshole vibe.

“And Vegas is how Luc met me.”

“Yes. Of course, I knew he went to Vegas, but when you were telling and even when you described your Aries, I never in my wildest dreams imagined that you meant Luc.”

“I don’t know what I’m going to do. He’s here in New York, and he plays for Dad’s team. I’m going to be seeing him for the interviews and watching him play. How am I just supposed to forget him?”

“I feel your pain. That guy isn’t one you’d forget. People practically worship him. Do you know how many women would kill to be in your shoes?”

It’s so strange that I’m the one with this news. Usually, it’s me listening to Zoe report some wild soap opera scandal. Now it’s me living my very own drama, but it’s short-lived. That isn’t my life. My life is this and a difficult road to recovery over the next six months.

“I hate my life. It’s like I have shit flying from all angles.”

“You really like him.”

“Yes, but that counts for nothing.” I sulk.

“Are you kidding me? I saw the way he looked at you. Plus there is all the other stuff you told me about him trying to find you in Vegas. Autumn, he likes you, too. You can’t overlook that.”

“Maybe so, but I can’t go against my father on something like this. He’d never forgive me. He’d probably think I’d go after Luc to spite him.”

“Hey, stop.” Zoe holds up her hands, showing off perfectly manicured fingernails. “Stop right there. Don’t think of your father anymore today. Later, when I head out, jump on your computer and do an Internet search on Luc.”

“Is that wise?”

“Yes. Believe me, it is. This way when you see him again you’ll know a little more about him. Plus you get to swoon over all the hot pictures the press have up on their sites. Looking isn’t illegal, even if you want to do other things.” She releases my hands and grins. “So, do it, and you can thank me later.”

“Okay. I will.”

I hate looking at things I can’t have but on this occasion I’m too tempted to give in to logic.
