“You have mine, too.” Evan doesn’t look at me.

Since his word is as good as old dog shit, I know I need to keep watching my back for his potential ploys to get rid of me.

“Great. I’ll hold you both to that promise. I want to see it in full force at tomorrow’s game. You can go now.” Jakobe glances back at me. “Luc, can I have a word with you in private?”

“Of course.”

I’m a quick study so my guess is he either wants to talk to me a bit more about my behavior, or his daughter.

Evan gets up and leaves. As soon as the door closes another sort of tension fills the room.

“What would you like to talk to me about?” I ask.

Jakobe rests his elbows on the desk and leans forward. “My daughter.”

I was right. It’s the latter.

“Which one?” I’m playing with him.

He chuckles without humor. “You know the one I mean but to jog your memory, I mean Autumn. I couldn’t help but notice that you seemed taken with her.”

“She’s beautiful. I’m sure we all were.” I don’t know what Autumn told him, but I don’t think it was much, or anything at all. I made it seem like we’d just met at the fundraiser. I presumed she was doing the same.

“I suppose so. Listen, she’s not like thepuck bunniesyou guys associate with and she’s not here for anything other than business.”

“Okay.” I say the word with emphasis to encourage him to get to the point of what he wants to tell me.

“What I’m trying to say is that I would prefer it if you kept your distance outside of business.”

I tilt my head and regard him with an open expression. “So you’re telling me to stay away from your daughter?”

“You said it. Not me.” He rivets his gaze to mine, as if daring me to challenge him. “We just spoke about gaining my trust. I’d hate for you to do anything more that will cast you back in my bad books.”

Motherfucker.He’s giving me an ultimatum.

A newfound anger ignites in my gut at the realization and rolls across my body in a wave of fire.

This is the point where if I was being myself I’d give him a good rundown of how many times I fucked his precious daughter and how I got hooked on the taste of her pussy.

The words are in my mind, ready to unleash, but knowing that would fan the flames of hell I hold on to every word in a deathgrip until I manage to tamp down my rage.

“Right, I see.” I speak in a flat tone, showing no emotion. I suppose at least I now know where I stand. The cards have been laid out on the table, and I have to figure out my next move.

“Good. You and I haven’t started off on the best foot but we don’t have to continue on that path. Just because your father and I had our disagreements doesn’t mean we have to.”

He should take his own advice. It was he who first started talking shit about my dad, opening the floor for this animosity between us.

“No, we don’t.” I decide to humor him. There is no universe where we’ll be anything other than what we are. Preston taughtme that when people show you their true face, always pay attention and never give them a chance to weaken you.

“I think you’re one of the best, but that doesn’t make you irreplaceable.”

I give him the uncanny smile I’ve been holding back. “I never thought for one moment that I was.”

“Good, then I think we have an understanding on what you need to do if you want to continue playing for the Hawks, or the chance to become team captain.”

Dirty motherfucker. “Looks like we do.”

“I think we’re done here.”
