When I look back at Evan, the ass backwards grin he gives me suggests he’s clocked my thoughts. Although he might not know that Jakobe warned me away from his daughter.

Or maybe he does. I wouldn’t put it past that man to discuss my affairs with his favorite.

“Yes, Luc. I’ll be taking care of Autumn and tending to all her needs.” Evan’s words are like a sucker punch to my gut. “She’ll need help with scheduling the guys for their interviews and various other things. I guess you don’t have to worry about that since you don’t do interviews.”

I don’t answersinceI’d love to use my fists instead of fruitless words with him.

Evan switches his gaze from me and looks at Autumn. “Our reservation is booked for ten minutes’ time. You ready?”

“Yes.” Autumn glances at me with a silent apology in her stare before looking back at him. “I’ll just grab my coat.”

She does and as I watch her walk over to him, I see exactly what’s happening here.

We have a liaison officer who deals with PR events and schedules everything without the need for the players to do it. I’ve never been on a team that did so and definitely not in the middle of the fucking season.

Knowing Jakobe, thisis probably how he hopes to mend the situation with Cole and the sister—Charlotte. So this isn’t about work.

He’s setting Autumn up with Evan.

And I have to stand here again looking like a schmuck, watching Evan take something else that belongs to me.

Fuck.

Chapter 14

Autumn

“See you tonight, Luc.” I try to smile, but it doesn’t reach my lips. The disappointment from the outcome of our conversation pulls heavy on my heart and I don’t even have the energy to hide it.

“Sure.” His tone is stiff and full of disapproval as he glares at Evan, who I wish wasn’t here.

I was so happy Luc came to see me I could hardly contain myself. I’d been trying to figure out how I could see him before tonight’s game. Then he showed up, but the difficult conversation I knew we needed to have followed.

We’re to stay away from each other.

Although Dad gave me the warning, my temper pushed through the roof when Luc told me Dad warned him away, too, but it’s clear neither of us can do anything about it.

I don’t even know if Luc would want to. That might be something I’ll never find out because ofEvan. I wasn’t expecting him until later, but it looks like Dad put him up to coming by earlier.Damn it.

“I sincerely hope you change your mind about the interview,” I tell Luc.

That interview was going to be my excuse to see him.

“Save your breath, princess.” Evan smirks. “Pretty boy here has turned down every paper and magazine interested in him.”

“Been doing your research? You seem to know a lot about me.” Luc’s jaw tenses and I pick up the animosity between them.

“I know what I need to know.” Evan matches Luc’s battle stance, and I realize just how much these two dislike each other.

“Maybe Luc might agree to the interview for me.” My words turn Luc’s attention back to me, and the darkness in his eyes fazes out, replaced by a hopeful glimmer.

“We’ll see.”

“Come on, babe. Food awaits.” Evan taps my shoulder. “Bye, Le Blanche.”

Evan ushers me away and once again I leave Luc, glancing back at him as I walk through the door.

This time feels worse. It feels like the final goodbye. Like we got some closure on Vegas. Something I never wanted because I didn’t want it to end.
