“I hope so.”

“Iknowso. It’s hard now because it’s fresh pain and no one can tell you how long that feeling will last, but it will pass. If it passed for me, it will for you too.”

“That gives me hope.” I nod, appreciating his words of strength.

“Good. Now that we both know what’s going on with each other, we can resolve this problem of ours.”

“You don’t think it will be safer if we just remain friends?”

Luc leans forward, giving me a wicked grin. “That’s just the thing, Venus. You and I were never friends.” His eyes roam over my face and the lust I see is so intense and full of hunger it leaves me breathless. “So I’m not interested injustbeing your friend. Friends don’t think about fucking each other every chance they get. Ready to hear my idea?”

His smoldering words ignite every ounce of desire In my soul, and I’m now desperate to hear this idea of his. “Yes. Tell me.”

“Secret. We see each other in secret. I say nothing and you say nothing. We’re exclusive for the time that you’re in New York. At the end you go back to L.A. and then we can think about being friends.” He straightens but keeps his sharp stare fixed on me. “No strings attached, no problems, no staying away from each other until we decide to. What do you think of that?”

It sounds wild and like sinful temptation I shouldn’t resist. Just like him.

“I think if it can work then it sounds great.”

“Then take the rest of the week to think about it. Give me your answer by Monday when I’m back from Arizona. Can you do that for me?”

I nod. “Yes.”

“Good. Come here.” He crooks his finger and beckons for me to move closer.

I do. Luc meets me halfway, closing the space between us with a tender kiss.

The kind of kiss you savor and never want to end.

My body is already screaming a million yesses to his offer, but I know I have to be sensible.

Not only because of my father and his threats. Luc Le Blanche is the kind of guy you fall for. If I do, that might be a bigger problem I won’t be able to handle when we have to say goodbye.

Chapter 19

Luc

The Hawks glide across the ice like demons, with their sticks in hand ready to strike. The sound of blades cutting into the smooth ice mixes with the swish of the puck passing back and forth.

We’re in another game of war. Tonight we’re playing Boston, a team with players who are just as badass and skilled as we are.

This is the second half of the match, and no one has scored yet. Each side has been going all out to stop the other from even thinking they could have a chance.

I’m supposed to be as focused on the game as everyone else but, damn me, all I can think about is her.

Autumn is in the stands with her family watching us play but, to me, she could be the only person in the arena. I wish she were.

Two days ago we ended our meeting with that kiss that saw us making out for hours like high school kids.

I can’t remember the last time I did that. It must have been well over a decade ago and definitely before I went to Princeton. By then I was thinking with my dick so much it’s a wonder Imade it through college with the grades I got. It’s a wonder I made it through at all.

But this is different. I’ve never met anyone like Autumn Jakobe before. This girl has me wrapped so tightly around her finger she’s competing with hockey—the love of my life.

Out of the corner of my eye I steal a glance at her again. I’m in the safe zone while Heath and Jake are owning the game.

She’s watching me, but so is her father. I’m not concerned about him, though. Not tonight.

I’m watching my Venus.
