“Pro athletes, Rogan. Not college boys,” she says, rolling her eyes.

“If all goes as planned, I’ll be playing for the NFL in a few years,” he states.

“Good. You can volunteer to be on her show then.” She pats him on the back, then her pleading eyes swing to me. “So what do you think?”

Setting my dirty dishes in the dishwasher, I close the door. I take my time turning around. “About what?”

“Don’t be obtuse. Will you be on her show?”

“Why are you so gung ho about this? You just met her today.”

“She’s so welcoming. I showed up in her yard, and she fed me.”

“She fed you? What did you have?” Rogan asks, sounding outraged.

“Chinese leftovers,” Maeve taunts, smacking her lips together.

“Oh, damn. You should’ve texted me,” he says.

“There was only enough for two, but it was delicious. I’m going over tomorrow for crab dip and margaritas.”

“I’m coming with you,” Rogan tells her.

“You’re not invited,” she sings.

“You can’t stop me,” he sings back.

“Well, this has been fun. We should do it again,” I tell them, knowing tomorrow night will bring more of their bickering.

“We love you too, Niall,” Maeve says.

“Night, bro,” Rogan calls out.

“Night.” My bedroom is about ten steps from the kitchen, so once I’m inside, I turn on the TV to drown out the sound of my siblings. I love them both, but having them here will make for a long week.

I showered before leaving the arena, so I change into a pair of pajama pants and an old t-shirt. Dropping onto my bed, I pick up the remote and flip to an entertainment show that’s sharing clips of a movie I’d like to watch. When that segment finishes, I’m surprised when my ex, Destiny, appears on the screen.

Fuck me.

I can’t drag my eyeballs from the large flatscreen while she aims her blinding white smile at the camera. The interviewer asks how being a mother has changed her life.

“My baby girl is the best thing that ever happened to me,” she says.

“Have you spoken with Niall O’Roarke since the two of you split?”

My entire body starts to tremble.

Destiny shows amazing composure, but I’d expect nothing less from someone as heartless as she is. “No, I haven’t, but I wish him the best.”

“How are things with you and Garrett?” the interviewer asks.

My fists clench with anger at the mention of my former teammate and ex-friend.

She beams at the camera. “Wonderful. We’re a happy little family.”

A picture of Destiny, Garrett, and their baby, Bella, flashes onto the screen, squeezing my heart in a vise. Bella, the beautiful baby girl Destiny led me to believe was my daughter.

Pausing the show, I stare at the “happy little family.” Does Destiny experience any guilt over how she broke my heart? She doesn’t look torn up about it, that’s for sure. She replaced me with Garrett without a hitch, and life went on for them.
