I could be her protection from Les.But I don’t think she’d want me to be. She made it clear she’s been taking care of herself just fine.

I could get her tickets to a few of the Charleston Pirates games and introduce her to some of the players. She’d probably like that.

Maeve jumps to her feet. “I’ve got it!” She begins pacing back and forth across the living room. “During the VROOM call, they were talking about finding professional athletes from the local teams to be on her show. They think it will improve the viewership by bringing in a younger male demographic. Twenty-something men idolize their sports heroes. And women of all ages like to look at attractive athletes. Myself included.”

“Niall should be on her show,” Rogan yells out like it’s a punchline to a joke.

“Exactly.”

“How would I broach the subject? What do I say?‘If you pretend to be my fiancée, I’ll be on your show’?”

“Not word for word. Something along those lines but with a little more finesse,” she says. “We can help you figure out how to convince her to agree.”

Rogan blows out an audible sigh and shakes his head. “For God’s sake, you’re an O’Rourke. Put your good looks and charm to use.”

“He’s right. You’re handsome, and that plays to your advantage,” Maeve says.

I’m not worried about her being attracted to me.

Okay, that’s a lie. I want her to like the way I look.

But I want her to like me for more than my looks.

Maybe this is an opportunity to show her the real me.

“Okay, I’ll do it. But you two need to help me plan what I’ll say and when I should talk with her.”

“Yes!” Maeve throws her fist in the air, celebrating. She bounds over and falls onto the couch.

“Also, I forgot to mention Lucy is going to the next game with you two.”

“Is it tomorrow night?” Maeve asks.

“No, the night after.”

“Maybe you should woo her with your skills on the ice before you bring up your offer,” she suggests.

“Yeah, I agree. That’ll give me more time to work out what to say.”

How much time does one need to prepare to ask someone to be their fake fiancée?

CHAPTER 12

LUCY

“There’s Calista.”I point her out to the O’Rourke siblings.

“So that’s my competition,” Maeve jokes.

Rogan whistles. “Is she single?”

“Nope. She got engaged to Ryder Goode on Christmas.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yep. She called to tell me right afterward.”

“All the good ones are taken,” he complains.
