I groan. “I think I’m gonna get retribution on all you fuckers somehow.”

CHAPTER 18

LUCY

“Haveyou heard from Rogan since he went to Vail?”

“He texted me some pictures the other day, but that’s it,” Maeve says.

I smile. “I bet he and his friends are having a blast.”

“Yeah. They’re raising hell, for sure. Niall told him not to call him for bail money if he gets arrested.”

“Who does he think he’s fooling? He’d bail him out so fast,” I say.

“Yep, he would. He’d chew his head off after, but he’d never ignore either of us if we needed help in any way.”

“I envy how close y’all are. But I think I was destined to be an only child.”

“You don’t miss what you haven’t had,” she says. “There’s good and bad with or without having siblings.”

“Don’t make me look weird,” I say, watching in the mirror as she studies my hair.

She scoffs. “As if you could look weird.”

“Shouldn’t your reply have been along the lines of, ‘don’t worry, I won’t’?”

“You’re going to a black-tie affair with my brother to announce your engagement to the world. I will make people gasp at your fabulous hair.”

I roll my fake-lashed eyes. Maeve also did my makeup, which looks like it was professionally done.

“How do you know how to do all this girl stuff so well when you were raised with brothers?”

“My mom always made girl time for the two of us. She’d paint my nails and let me paint hers. When I got interested in makeup, she let me practice on her. As I got older, she would ask me to do her makeup whenever she and my dad had a night out together.”

“You didn’t want to go to beauty school?” I ask.

“I love all the girly things, but if I had to do this for work, it would take the fun out of it.”

“Oh, that reminds me, how did your interviews go?” I ask.

“One was with a small company, where I’d be answering phones and taking care of clerical stuff. Not really my dream job.”

“That’s too bad,” I say.

“But the other interview was with the Coyotes organization. I’d be a personal assistant to one of the higher ups. I’m unsure which one because they didn’t mention who for.”

“Is that something that interests you?” I ask.

“I think it could lead to better things within the organization, so I’m crossing my fingers it’ll go in my favor.”

“Good luck. I’ll cross mine too.”

“Wait until your nails dry,” she warns, gesturing to the shiny red polish.

“Thanks for reminding me.”

When Maeve finishes styling my hair, it’s parted to one side and curled back from my face. She hands me dangling diamond hoop earrings to put on.
