What is wrong with you, Em?

As I set the table and sit down to enjoy my breakfast, I wonder if our paths will cross again, if fate has more in store for us. For now, I'll just have to savor the memory of last night.

Suddenly, Lily bursts into our shared kitchen with her phone clutched excitedly in her hand. Her face is alight with a mix of exhilaration and disbelief.

“Emily, you won't believe this!” she exclaims, practically bouncing in her spot.

I turn to her, curiosity piqued. “What's going on?”

Lily grins and thrusts her phone toward me, showing me a news article on the screen. “Our turtle protest made the news, Em! Apparently, a reporter at Ben Hawthorne's party caught wind of the paper turtles and covered the whole thing!”

I gasp, my eyes scanning the headline, “Enigmatic Turtle Papers Surface at Sovereign Harbor Yacht Party,” and the accompanying photos of our makeshift turtle sculptures and protest signs. “Oh my goodness, Lily, this is amazing!”

Lily's laughter fills the room as she does a little victory dance. “Can you believe it? Our message is out there, making waves!”

I can't help but share in her enthusiasm. I quickly skim the article, my lips parting with excitement as I take it all in.

Sovereign Harbor, Miami, Florida- During an exclusive yacht party, striking sea turtle sculptures made from marine debris mysteriously appeared at Sovereign Harbor. Bearing messages on the impact of marina’s pollution on local sea turtles, this anonymous protest serves as a powerful call to action, urging yacht owners to prioritize environmental responsibility.

Miami's marine life, including loggerheads, leatherbacks, and green sea turtles, faces growing threats from pollution and marina lights. The enigmatic turtle papers emphasize the need for sustainability even amid luxury yachting.

The appearance of these sculptures has ignited conversations about environmental responsibility, highlighting the urgent need to protect Miami's marine ecosystems.

These enigmatic turtle papers serve as a testament to the power of art and activism, advocating for a more sustainable future.

“This is just the beginning, Lily. Our voices are being heard, and maybe this will lead to some positive changes,” I reply. I hand the phone back to Lily and return to my eggs, still preoccupied with the thoughts of the man from last night.

Lily could always pick up on when something was off with anyone, but especially me. “What's wrong? This is great news!” She walked over and rested her arm on my shoulder. “Everything okay?” She looks at me with a hint of concern in her eyes.

“Yeah, I just got tired from last night. We were there to spread the message, but I ended up partying a little too hard, too.” I look down at the eggs, but they suddenly became very unappealing. I tried to take one bite but ended up gagging.

“Em, are you sure everything’s okay?” Lily looked concerned now.

“Yup! Hopefully, everything works out in the turtle's favor. They need all the support they can get.” I said as I reach over for a grapefruit.

Lily looks at me questioningly.

“Are you really going for that grapefruit?” she asks.

I shrug, “I know, it’s not usually my thing, right?”

I typically don't crave grapefruit, but something this morning makes me want something bitter and acidic today. I start peeling the skin and eat it as is. Lily turns away to make her own breakfast, trying to hide her look of bewilderment.

“You know you can tell me anything, right?” She reminds me.

“Of course I do, Lily,” I reply. “I am just tired today.”

As I finish my breakfast and set aside my empty plate, I grab my phone to read more news. I whisper to myself as if to stop my thoughts from circling back to last night’s party.

“Just tired today is all…”

Chapter eight

Alex

I'm sprawled out on a sun chair on the deck of my yacht, a book in hand that I can't seem to focus on. The gentle rocking of the yacht on the water and the warm Miami sun should make for a perfect reading spot, but my thoughts are elsewhere.
