Chris stares at me through those glasses. He nods slowly as if trying to process or think of what to say next.

“I know she's your sister and it's probably not that easy for you, but I love her,” I say,

Chris adjusts his glasses, looking at me with a hint of surprise in his eyes. “Youloveher?”

“Yeah,” I admit. “It's not just a casual thing. She's special to me, and it's not just because she's a great person, which she is. There's just something about her that draws me in.”

Chris smiles, his tone understanding and reassuring. “You know, I've had some time to think about it, Alex. I've seen how you treat her, how you've been there for her. I may be her big brother, but I've realized that my opinion shouldn't dictate her happiness. If you both feel this way… then you have my blessing.”

Wait, really?

I can’t believe it. I'm touched by Chris's acceptance.

“Thanks, man. I…appreciate that,” I say. “And I promise I'll treat her like a queen.”

"Alright, man, that's enough mushy talk for one day," Chris says with a chuckle. "If you can just hire an event planner next time for all this shit, that'd be great—'cause I need a drink now."

With a smile, I respond, "What can I say? She likes this stuff—and I want her to have fun with it."

Chris shakes his head, and I can't help but let out a laugh at that.

I suddenly get a strong sense of purpose…because knowing that my best friend is supportive means the world to me.

Chapter thirty-two

Emily

Before I know it, the party is in full swing. There are vibrant bursts of colors and laughter everywhere, and I can't help but be excited by the lively atmosphere.

Wow,we really pulled this off!

The guests have wholeheartedly embraced the glow-in-the-dark theme, and their outfits are nothing short of mesmerizing. Some are adorned in shimmering, luminescent clothing that emits a soft, ethereal glow in the darkness. I spot shirts, dresses, and even accessories that seem to come alive under the blacklights, giving an almost supernatural aura over the partygoers.

I pause and look at a nearby mirror on the wall. I'm delighted by the sight of my sexy glow-in-the-dark dress. Crafted from luminescent fabric, the garment clings to my figure, showcasing a daring thigh slit and crisscrossing straps at the back. When the blacklights hit, the dress comes alive with a mesmerizing radiance.

Tonight is going to be a blast.

When I look around more, I see that the decorations themselves are a spectacle to behold. Neon stars and planets hang from the ceiling, suspended as if they were in orbit. They twirl gently, adding a celestial touch to the atmosphere. Larger-than-life cutouts of characters from the book line the deck, their faces and costumes painted with phosphorescent paint that glows brilliantly.

The party games unfold with spirited enthusiasm, and I find myself drawn to a familiar childhood favorite: “Pin the Tail on the Star.” The adaptation is whimsical and entertaining, with blindfolded participants taking their chances at placing a glow-in-the-dark star sticker on a celestial backdrop. It's a game that's equal parts fun and absurdity, perfectly suited for our glow-in-the-dark-themed celebration.

“Go! Go! Go!” party guests cheer as someone tries to stick their sticker but misses.

Laughter fills the air as friends and guests engage in this playful contest. The atmosphere is charged with an air of lightheartedness and camaraderie. The game brings about an infectious sense of joy as participants, blindfolded and spinning, aim for that elusive spot to pin their “tails.”

I watch as Chris decides to throw his hat into the ring. His approach to the game is more enthusiastic than anyone else's, if not slightly nerdy.

That’s my brother, all right.

With a blindfold securely in place, he stumbles in search of that perfect spot on the celestial backdrop. The ensuing clumsiness adds a touch of slapstick comedy to the evening's festivities.

“Hey! Emily, right?” I hear a slightly familiar voice call me.

I turn, and I’m surprised to see Ben staring at me. He gestures to a glowing limbo sick and says, “Come join us!”

My initial reaction is to shake my head.

“No,” I say, “I’m okay.”
