“Well, he should be here any minute, so we can collect a sample for a test,” I tell my brother and father.

“I want to know as soon as you have the results,” Cesare orders.

I shoot him a look.

I’m not mad at him, per se, but I’m certainly not happy with him right now, either.

“And be careful. Blood doesn’t mean anything, sorellina,” my brother adds.

Dom’s come a long way since the attack against my uncle. He sustained the worst injuries with his leg being crushed by the door. But he healed fast and went through physical therapy with stride. The doctors say, with time and work, his limp will go away. He’s also gotten better at tampering down his temper.

“I know,” I tell him.

As we say our goodbyes and hang up, as if on cue, a flushed-looking Liling enters quickly.

“Ma’am, Grayson and the analyst have arrived.” Winded, she tries to stifle her panting.

My brows pinch together, and her eyes grow wide. “Thank you. Send them to my office in five.”

She scurries out as I say my goodbyes to my husband and make my way up to my office.

Taking a gulp of water and deep breaths to calm my nerves, I sit behind my desk as Bo takes a seat in front of me. After a knock at the door, it swings open, and Grayson enters with the analyst.

“Nice to see you, Bo,” Grayson says as Bo stands quickly.

“It’s really you. I almost didn’t believe it,” Bo says, shaking his head in awe. “I’m surprised you remember me. You were so young.”

“I remember everything.”

The analyst introduces herself and explains the process, but I don’t hear much of anything. Before I know it, he’s taking a sample from my cheek and walking out the door with orders to have the results within seventy-two hours.

Chapter Ten

ANYA

"Gabriella, I could kiss you!” I exclaim, strolling into the kitchen, where our housekeeper has a whole breakfast bar set up.

It’s officially wedding week, so the girls have something planned for us every day. Excitedly, I examine the spread, trying to decide what I want first. There are carafes of various juices and my favorite almond champagne chilling in ice. It offers a build-your-own-benedict bar with all the toppings one could think of—my eyes linger on the crab cakes—and Gabriella’s famous hollandaise sauce, along with an assortment of French, Vietnamese, and Chinese pastries. And, of course, a coffee and tea bar.

Today is brunch at the house. Nico’s mother, along with Maya, Donna, Lili, and Max are coming over to finalize items for the wedding—well, Marcella, Donna and Lili will likely do the finalizing. Maya, Max, and I will be doing the drinking.

I’d decided on a brunch at home, since it’s been difficult going anywhere without being followed. So, this week will be a series of private events and sneaking in and out of kitchens.

Gabriella chuckles. “I’ll settle for a thank-you, Miss Anya.”

I finally broke her down after a couple of months and was able to get her to call me Anya, though she insists on adding “miss” in front of it.

“Thank you, Gi! At least take a coffee and some pastries to go.”

“I’m so sad I won’t be able to make it to the wedding,” she says solemnly as she wipes down the counter top where she was cooking before pouring herself a drink in a coffee tumbler.

“It’s perfectly fine. I understand you wanting to go see your mom while she’s not doing well.”

Like most of our staff, Nico and I gave her the week of our honeymoon off, since we wouldn’t be home anyway.

“I really appreciate it, ma’am. Is there anything else you need from me before I head out?” She makes her way to the elevator door, slipping on her shoes.

“No, we’re good. Thanks. Why don’t you stay?”
