We’ll have to question him later.

Val saunters in with a fresh batch of espresso and wine cookies. Her steps halt when she notices the tension in the room. Bo moves to her and guides her with his hand against her lower back. He gives her a reassuring smile before Bash nods at the table, letting her know it’s okay. She sets the tray down, but refuses to make eye contact with Bo.

“Thank you, Valentina,” Bo says smoothly as he reaches for his cup before he takes a sip, never breaking eye contact with her.

Valentina turns bright red like a nervous school girl and retreats quickly back into the kitchen. I look over at my wife, who, despite her fury, can’t hide her shock. I can tell she wants to ask, but now is not the time.

“Our men know to question him. We’ll find out what he knows,” Bash says, breaking the silence.

“What the hell?” Dom pipes up, shaking his head, having witnessed the whole scene from his screen.

Anya plops down, letting out a breath.

“I’m so stupid,” she says, dropping her face into her hands.

“This isn’t on you, xiao lóng. We vetted him, and he was clean,” Bo reassures her.

“We even checked his place and phone. This had to have been a recent development,” I add.

How did I miss this?Something could’ve happened to her, and it would’ve been my fault.

“You think Caishen got him to switch sides? This doesn’t make sense. How did Caishen even know he existed?” she asks.

“Yeah, I want to know that, too. We only told our captains,” Kai demands.

“Unless Grayson went to Goh himself,” I allude.

“We’ll get our answers, but right now, we have another pressing issue. Caishen knows our plan now. We need to move up the timeline,” Bash replies.

“I don’t like this.” Dom pipes up. “This is rushed. It’s getting sloppy.”

Dom’s tone brings me back to when my father used to grill us as teens.

He’s not wrong.

You young ones are too full of yourselves, too confident for your own good. You think you know everything. You don’t. I don’t care how long you’ve been a made man. You get too cocky—you get killed.

“We don’t have a choice, Dom. We’ve run out of time,” Anya replies. “The only other option is to leave with him on Saturday. Then what? We have no idea what he’s planning to do if I don’t go with him, and I don’t want to find out.”

“Fuck,” he mutters.

“Now that that’s settled—” Bash begins.

“Let’s look into his plans for the rest of the week, and we can go from there,” Anya suggests.

Chapter Nineteen

NICO

Iwant nothing more than to take my wife home and fall into bed. Instead, I’m in my brother’s cellar, questioning Anya’s brother. I glance over at my reflection, knowing my wife is watching us from the other side.

Bo and Anya both wanted in on this, but I put my foot down. I let them do it their way, and look where it got us. Caishen knows our plan and is now more alert than ever, waiting for our next move. Gabriella is dead.

Grayson keeps his head down and doesn’t say a word from the chair he’s tied to. I stand over him with my arms crossed.

“Why’d you do it?”

He doesn’t answer.
