I try to reason, but she shakes her head.

“She was our housekeeper, Nico. She didn’t ask for this life. She was just trying to take care of her family.”

“And now it’s our job to take care of them,” I whisper in her ear, pulling her closer.

There’s nothing else for me to say. Gabriella’s family will be taken care of for the rest of their lives, but it doesn’t take away the guilt in her words and the pain in her eyes. It’s enough to bring me to my knees.

While it’s our job to take care of our people, the downside to what we do is losing someone. Whether it be a woman or one of our men, it is still a loss.

She turns and wraps her arm around my torso, laying her head on my chest. We sit there in silence for several minutes until I see commotion behind us. Dante is standing at the sliding doors and tips his head for us to come back inside.

When we return to Bash’s study, Dominic’s unfortunate face lights up on screen, taking the call from Chicago as usual. No Cesare tonight. Bo and Kai walk in with Grayson trailing them. Bash shoots me a warning look, but I ignore him.

“Motherfucker!” I charge up at Grayson and grab him by the collar before pinning him to the wall.

“Nico!” Anya shouts.

Grayson fights back but fails. “Get the fuck off of me!”

“Tell me how Caishen knew what we were planning Saturday!” I get in his face, giving him another shove.

“How the hell should I know!” Grayson retorts.

“Dante.” I nod.

Dante searches his coat and pants.

“Nico, stop it.” Anya pulls on my sleeve. “This is insane!”

“Get the fuck off me!” Grayson attempts to fight me off, but I have him in an iron grip.

“No wire,” Dante says as he reaches into Grayson’s pocket.

“Dante, this is crazy,” Anya pleads.

I put my hand on her shoulder. “It’s the only way to know for sure.”

“Stay out of my shit, man!”

Dante ignores him as he picks out the sim card and holds it up. A chip. If you didn’t know what you were looking for, you’d miss it. But I didn’t.

The room goes silent.

Anya’s eyes widen on the device before they shoot at her brother, but she doesn’t say a word. Bo and Kai wear expressions of shock.

“I don’t know what the fuck that is,” Grayson argues.

“What the hell is this?” My wife asks him so quietly even I get goose bumps.

“I swear, I don’t know—”

His words are cut off when Anya’s slap rings throughout the study.

“I’m serious. I don’t know what that is or how it got there.”

I pull Anya closer to me. “Get him out of here!”

Two of Bash’s men appear to pull him away.
