And we would have gotten away with it, too.

If someone hadn’t been waiting and watching… and that disturbs me more than I let on. Disturbs Harry, too.

“They sent me a fucking note, Lena. A note. I thought…I thought it was from that blonde God of an ass, Jac. The dark-haired King of Hell, Hendrick told me it wasn’t him.” She pauses. “Tell me again why we can’t up and leave?”

I sit on the bed, knees under my chin, wanting not to be here, in clothes that aren’t mine. At least it’s just me, Harry, the food, and the booze this time. She’s got her feet on one armchair and sits in the other, frowning as she looks at the cornucopia of jewels on the file.

When I don’t answer, she keeps going.

“There’s nothing to stop us cutting loose and running. We’re packed, and we have enough money,” she says. “Not as much as we’d have liked, but c’mon, we’re good at living on the edge. We got mad skills.”

I sigh. “That’s the problem, isn’t it? With Jac and Hendrick, we were taking a risk, but the necklace, once we sold it, wouldhave set us up for life, and…” I don’t really want to say it. But I do. “I’m not sure how hard they’d look.”

She laughs. “Are you insane? They’d look. What you mean is you don’t think they’d kill us.”

“Something like that,” I reply. “But there are other players, ones we don’t know. If robberies start to happen in other parts of the country, or even the world that even give off a whiff of being executed by the Invisible Cat, you don’t think it wouldn’t be noticed? By the wrong parties?”

“And they knew enough to track you to your apartment. They got both of them, too.”

“I’m not risking you, Harry.”

She turns, looks at me, gaze sliding down to the burner, and to the phone Hendrick gave me before they left.

“Or we could pull apart the basement workshop, find the Heart of Dark Desires.”

“You don’t think they’re doing that?” I ask as her eyes narrow. “Hendrick and Jac?”

“They better not be.” She slaps the iPad on her lap. “Why the fuck are we here, Lena?”

“Because my homes are trash and we’ve been ordered?”

“And what if I had lined up some grade A pussy tonight?”

I look at her, deadpan. “While worrying about me?”

“I can multitask.” She flashes a grin, but it fades quickly. She leans on the arm of the chair toward me. “If they fuck with my set up, I’ll fuck with them.”

“Big talk, Harry.”

“Honey,” she says, “I’m a big girl.” She studies me. “Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

She breathes out. “You really think they’ll have ripped my place apart?”

“I don’t know.” I pause. “But I think it’s one of the pieces these people want. No, I know it is. They wouldn’t have demanded it, otherwise.”

“Y’know this is bullshit. We run.”

I smooth my hands down along my legs. “And you think there’s somewhere we can go and hide?”

“You think there isn’t? C’mon, I’m not saying I haven’t gotten my tits tangled over some chick, but if you’re staying for these two men…” Her voice trails off. “You want to get your hands on these jewels.”

I think about it, honestly, I do. I think about lying to her, but Harry knows me.

“Of course I do.”

“You got a big ass problem, Lena.”
