“It’s more than the thrill of finding jewels we don’t know about.” I nod at the iPad because while it has ones we know of, famous, infamous, in collections, lost to time, it also has jewels I’ve never seen.

And those jewels are gorgeous.

“We don’t know which jewels,” Harry mutters, flicking through the ones on the iPad. “You know what this looks like? Right?”

Sighing, I get up, make a cocktail, and grab a sandwich. It’s ham, double smoked, with fine pickles and cheese. I just pour soda into a glass of whiskey and call it a day. Harry’s got a bottle by her side, and a pile of various sandwiches next to it. I’m not overly hungry, although I should be, but I also know I need to eat.

She’s picked up on the signs, the nervous energy, the picking at food. It’s me at the height of the cat, getting ready to take something I see as a challenge. Something I want.

I take a sip, put another couple of sandwich quarters on a plate, and sit back on the bed.

“Yes, I know what that is. A data base. They haven’t worked out which jewels I’m meant to take.”

“You’re excited.” Her words hold a note of accusation. “You getting your ovaries off on a heist we don’t need’s stupid.”

“It’s surviving.” I take a bite of a sandwich. Then I say, “They did promise payment.”

It’s a stretch, but I’ll stay with it.

“We’re survivors, Lena, my problematic friend. I don’t want you to steal from an unknown who’s threatened us, kidnapped you. I say we just take off. We can disappear, you know we can.”

“Disappear from whom?” I look at her. “We don’t even know who’s after us, and that makes nowhere safe.”

“You’re saying the best way to handle this is to see it through.”

“No.” I look at her, waving a hand towards the iPad. “Right now, we don’t know if any of those are the ones I’m meant to steal. But I think…” I stop, breathe. “I’m saying we find out what the jewels are, what they mean and do our thing.”

Her baby blues gleam. “As in…oh, man, you’re cray-cray.”

“You’re the one who insisted I mess with the Quinate.”

“Steal from one to give to the other, not get down and dirty with them.”

She knows what I’m talking about. It’s a huge risk, and it might just be the only way out alive, and the way to give us power.

“Harry, if we do the research, and I steal the pieces, can we pull it off?”

“The research…where do we start? It’s a big job.” She narrows her eyes.

“Are you chicken?” I ask.

Her eyes narrow more, and she tugs on one of her dark curls. “We can do anything. We’re the fucking best at what we do.”

“You and me against the world,” I reply.

“Fuck. I’m so glad I don’t have a thing for you, Lena. You’re trouble.”

“So?”

“So…” She sighs. “I’m in.”

And I grin. If it’s something I don’t feel one hundred percent, I bury that deep.

“Buckle up, Harry,” I say, “we’re in for a wild ride.”

We’re going to do what we did with the Heart of Darkness, but on a bigger scale.

“They can’t know,” she says, taking a slug of her bottle of whiskey. And she leans forward. “Fuck them all you want, but they can’t know.”
