I think about what he said, that I’m his favorite mortal. I notice a flicker of affection for me in his gaze, but I can’t expect him to fall for me. My track record proves that’s unlikely. Besides, the entire plan is for me to get Carl.

But do I even want Carl anymore?

To deflect from the strange emotions brewing inside me, with as much amusement as I can, I say, “I actually feel closer to you, but as for falling in love…”

Instead of answering, Eros slowly untangles himself from my body and sits up next to me. Meanwhile, I’m sprawled out, feeling strangely freer than I have ever felt in my life.

“Eros, thank you for helping me get that stuff off my chest.” I glance over to see him staring at me with an odd expression.

“Of course, anytime, sweetheart.” He pats my hand and then rests it over mine comfortably for another quiet moment. “Ready for a field trip now?”

FIELD TRIP

“Afield trip?” I ask with humor in my voice. “Am I in elementary school again?”

“I’d like to think of it as a master’s program.” Eros pulls me unwillingly to my feet, then he points at my bare toes and says, “Put some shoes on.”

“You want to leave right now?” I run my fingers through my messy hair. “But I have to get ready for the day!”

“Don’t worry, no one is going to see you.” Eros tosses my slip-on shoes at my feet.

I slide them on and begin to walk out of my room.

“Not that way. You ready?” Eros pulls me close, pressing my face to his broad chest.

I don’t have time to answer before I’m spinning through space. I land on solid ground in the next instant, and my stomach decides it isn’t having any of this. Doubled over, I hold my gut, hoping I won’t hurl on Eros’s shoes. He rubs my back until I feel better, the sensation quickly subsiding.

“What the hell?” I curse.

“Teleportation, or I believe that’s what you would call it.”

“You brought me along?” I slowly stand upright.

Thankfully, Eros hasn’t yet let go of me. I’m unsure if I could stand on my own.

“The first few times will be rough. It will also be easier on you when you are in control of the jump.”

“Will I be able to do that?” When he nods, my eyes widen, thinking of the possibilities. “Will it be harder on my senses the farther I go?”

“No,” Eros explains. “You’ll bend space so it touches. The distance is irrelevant. Mostly.”

“Cool.” I grin, thinking of all the places I could visit around the world. I could go on a photography shoot anywhere I wanted with this new ability. I’d just pop up to the highest mountain or the most remote location.

Glancing around, I wonder what we’re doing at some public park and why no one saw us pop into existence. “Don’t you have to be careful of people seeing us do that?”

“We’re invisible,” he says distractedly, scanning the park, obviously looking for someone.

My eyes dart from my body to his. We look solid. “I can see us.”

“We can see us, but no one else can.” His hand slides down to hold mine. “Just keep contact with me.”

“What are you going to teach me now?” I ask, eager to know more.

“There are a couple of joggers who make a good match.” Eros walks us over to the jogging trail. “We’re going to help them along.”

“This is exciting!” I bounce excitedly but keep a tight grip on Eros’s arm. “What are we going to do?” I squeeze him in anticipation.
