The sound is deafening, but I was already oblivious to our surroundings before I pulled the trigger. My focus is so narrowed in on Leo that I can’t see anything else. I’m partially blind and fully deaf.

Gun powder singes my nostrils as I breathe. Leo is already on the ground, but I keep shooting. I’m tempted to jump out of the car and make sure he’s dead, but I can’t risk showing my face.

The driver starts moving before I’m finished.

“Hey, not yet!”

The driver ignores me, speeding off down the street as Damien lets out an excited holler.

“We’re not…” I look down at my gun, realizing its empty. Wearedone, and Leo is most likely dead.

But he can’t be dead enough for me. I could kill him a hundred times over and he wouldn’t be dead enough.

Not after he almost took Kimberly’s life.

Damien jumps into the backseat, a smile plastered across his sweaty face. “Got that motherfucker good. Did you see how his boys scrambled? A bunch of roaches, I’ll tell you.”

I try to laugh with him, but I’m numb. It really is over, and it feels so anticlimactic. I expected a weight to be lifted, but there’s nothing. I feel nothing.

“I just want to get back home,” I mutter.

Damien grabs me by the shoulder, shaking me until my head bobbles. “We fucking did it, man. We killed that asshole, and everything is going to be better now. You’ll see.”

I smile for him, but I think it’s going to take a while for me to feel happy about any of this. The most important thing to me right now is getting back to Kimberly. Seeing her relief is the only thing that’s going to make me feel better.

“I hit him in the head. Did you see that? Twice, even,” Damien brags.

Truthfully, I don’t even remember where I hit Leo, only that he went down and I couldn’t stop shooting. I wanted to ensure he was dead, and I guess he is.

“You hit him too. That sucker is dead. Like, deaddead.”

A laugh escapes from my pursed lips, and my shoulders drop. “Yeah, I suppose he is.”

“And that just goes to show you, don’t ever mess with the Severov brothers.”

I never thought I’d be bonding with Damien over killing someone, but here we are. I smile, and I feel my heart rise in my chest. My blood is warm again, and I feel alive. I’m not sure if this is the way mom would’ve wanted us to make up, but I’ll take what I can get.

“Now, you have to tell me about this girl,” I say, riding the wave of euphoria into the next important topic.

He groans. “I knew this was coming. Can’t even wait ten seconds after killing someone to start pestering me about women again.”

“You’re the one being mysterious about it. I just want to know.”

“Okay, but you can’t run your mouth about it.”

“I promise,” I say with a crooked grin. “My ears are open, and my lips are sealed.”

Kimberly

My stomach drops when Avraam and Damien finally walk through the front door again. They smell like gunpowder and sweat, and they’re laughing with each other like they just got back from a night on the town.

Except I know they weren’t just playing cards and drinking. They were out to get Leo, as was made obvious when I checked the closet and realized the gun Avraam had bought and kept there was missing.

They think I’m some kind of clueless bitch, but I’m more observant than they could possibly know.

I try not to let the bitterness show on my face, but it’s obvious and Avraam’s face drops when he sees me. I don’t want to be that kind of woman, the kind that a man has to hide things from, but I’m not going to let him get away with something so drastic without getting chewed out.
