I nod, pouting my lips. “Just tell me everything, and I’ll take good care of you.”

He lets out a long breath, and then leans back in the seat. “Damien and I have been tracking Leo for a while now, as you know. He was frequenting a club in Salt Lake City, which is where we ended up this morning.”

“You guys drove all the way to Utah?” I ask, genuinely surprised.

“Yes, that’s why I had to leave so early. We got there and we waited for him. It was the only place we knew he would be beyond a shadow of a doubt, and sure enough, he came out around the time we thought he would.”

“And then what happened?” I ask, bracing for the chaos.

“We rolled down the windows and gunned him down. It was quick, and nobody saw us.”

“So, you didn’t get out of the car or anything? Are you sure there weren’t any cameras.”

“There weren’t, and we didn’t get out. Even if there were cameras, nobody would’ve seen us. The windows were tinted, and the car is untraceable. In fact, it’s already been crushed at the scrap yard.”

“Convenient,” I reply suspiciously.

“We were prepared, as you already know.”

“Alright, well…” I say, trying to think if there’s anything he hasn’t covered that would be cause for concern. I should trust him, but when there’s so much on the line, I have to be certain for my own sanity.

“We’re fine,” he assures me, wrapping his arms around me and squeezing. “You’re safe, the baby is safe, and nobody is going to come here to retaliate. We’ll be keeping an eye on Leo’s crew as his empire crumbles, but I doubt anything will come out of this.”

I hope what he’s telling me is right. I remember what Dr. Klara said, that I’d get used to it. I’m wondering when that will kick in.

I snuggle closer to Avraam, resting my head on his broad chest and listening to the gentle beat of his heart. Even though it’s been a challenge to cope with the danger the Bratva brings, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I have Avraam, and he’s my rock. I don’t need anything else.

Avraam shifts beneath me, his erection pressing into my panties from the back. His bulge is throbbing beneath me, begging me to take it out and ride it, but with Damien still in the house, I don’t know if that’s such a good idea.

I look up at Avraam with a knowing look.

“We could go to the garden,” he suggests. “Find cover behind one of the bushes.”

“It’s kind of cold, isn’t it?” I ask, but my body is so hot I doubt I’d feel it.

“I’ll keep you warm, darling,” he purrs into my ear. “Come, let’s celebrate.”

Snow covers the ground outside, a thick white blanket that brings with it the purest silence. I step outside as the sun rises, wrapped in a heavy knitted blanket and wearing Avraam’s oversized slippers.

The crisp air feels good against my face. This is the first night in weeks that I slept through the entire night, wrapped up like a burrito with Avraam. I woke up so hot and sweaty that I had to come outside, and I’m glad I did.

It smells like juniper trees and ice outside, a refreshing contrast to the warm cinnamon candles I’ve been burning all winter. The air is still and calm, and there’s not a single sound. No rustling trees, no chirping birds.

Just pure silence.

I inhale deeply through my nose, letting it out through my mouth in a cloud of moisture. I place my hand over my belly, which feels like it’s doubling in size every day. Avraam is excited because he keeps saying we’re going to have a huge baby, a giant man just like him, but we haven’t even found out if it’s a boy or a girl yet.

He’s cute, though. Always so excited about the baby. He talks about my pregnancy more than I do, and when he’s not gushing about how perfect our child is going to be, he’s kissing my belly and telling me how perfect a mother I already am.

I don’t deserve him, but I’ll never tell that to anyone. He’s my little secret, and I’m keeping him all to myself.

I take a step out into the snow, feeling the satisfying crunch beneath my foot. Avraam is going to be angry that his slippers are soaked, but he has about a dozen pairs already. He acts like he’s not overflowing with cash like a broken ATM.

I, on the other hand, have given up work entirely, upon his request. I haven’t had to lift a finger since my pregnancy started showing, and Avraam is always tripping over himself to do anything and everything for me.
