“Anything?” I ask.

“Anything in the world.”

“That’s too easy for you. I know you’re rich.”

“I did say anything. As long as it’s a material object that exists, I will do my best to give it to you,” he replies, running an idle finger down the tablecloth. “However, if you fail to come up with something that I can’t give you, then you owe me something.”

“Let me guess… me?” I ask, knowing how impossibly obsessed he is.

He chuckles. “Oh, darling, much more than that, but we’ll start the game off simple. You lose, and you give me the panties you’re wearing. Then, we start the next round if you’re still willing to play.”

The risk reward ratio is so skewed in my favor that I hardly believe what he’s telling me. Of course, I’m going to take this opportunity to escape his obsession. “Deal,” I say.

“You have thirty seconds,” he replies, tapping his watch.

Fuck, I wish I had more time than that, but this can’t be that hard. Anything in the world… If I can’t think of something, I’m going to lose my panties.

“Um, shit… Does it have to exist?”

He nods.

“Okay, let me think…”

“Ten seconds,” he says with a smirk.

“Oh God, stop putting me on the spot. I don’t know… how about the world’s biggest emerald. Yes, that’s what I want. The world biggest fucking emerald. Where is it?” I throw my hands out, looking around like it’s going to drop down from the sky. “I guess I win.”

“Not so fast,” he replies, pulling a bundle of phones from his pocket. There are four of them, bound together with an orange rubber band. He slides one out of the bunch, unlocking it and moving his fingers over the screen.

My stomach sinks at the possibility that he could somehow procure this emerald. I don’t even know how big it is. It could be quite modest, for all I know, worth a hundred-thousand dollars or something.

“Sold at auction a few months ago for three-million dollars,” Pasha says, looking up at me. “But lucky for you, I know who bought it. Only a few people who collect gems like that.”

“No way,” I reply, hardly believing he could know the person who bought it, much less be able to buy it from them at such short notice.

“Let’s call him,” he says, scrolling for a moment before he double-taps his finger on the screen. “There we are. Let’s hope he picks up.”

I hope he doesn’t, but at the same time, I’m curious how much effort Pasha is willing to go through in order to get me out of my panties. I mean, if he buys me an emerald worth three million dollars, I’d do a lot more than take off my panties for him.

I remain silent, biting the inside of my mouth as the phone rings once, twice, and then is picked up by a man with a deep voice and an accent that’s difficult to place. Maybe South America?

“Pasha, my friend, it’s been a while since I’ve heard from you.”

“Five million for your emerald,” Pasha says immediately.

There’s laughter from the phone, but Pasha doesn’t laugh along with him.

“I’m serious. Five million,” Pasha says, his rigid and unyielding.

“I’m not sure where all this has come from, but that emerald is very dear to me.”

“Name your price.”

“You’re not going to like this, Pasha, but I wouldn’t part from it for under ten million.”

The corners of Pasha’s eyes crinkle as he smiles. “Ten million it is, you old bastard. I’ll wire you the money immediately. Have it sent to my assistant, Boris, at the house in Texas you visited last time you were here.”

“You must be high or something, but you have yourself a deal. Wire me the money and she’s all yours.”
