“Yeah.” I laughed, belly swooping as I remembered what I’d done.

Oh god, maybe the farewell fart had been a bit too juvenile… But it was too late now.

“So, uh, what happened in the office?” Holt winced a little. “What else did we do up there besides the ball prints?”

I chuckled. “A few things. I’ll tell you when we get home.”

My belly clenched with a bout of nerves as I realised I’d called his place home. Honestly, I loved it there way more than my own apartment, but I didn’t know if it would freak Holt out to hear me say that. It was way too fast to be referring to his house as “home.”

But it didn’t seem to bother him at all. He just beamed at me, smoothing his thumb over my cheek.

“Okay.” He snickered. “Did they manage to get the decal off the wall?”

I snorted. “No. But I have a copy we can keep in my bag.”

“I’ll frame it for you,” Holt purred, dipping down to kiss my neck. “You can keep it on your nightstand.”

Smiling, I buried my face in his neck and exhaled. In some ways, it felt like the first full breath I’d taken in years.

“Thank you,” I found myself mumbling. “Not just for the new job, but… everything. You’ve kind of changed my whole life, Holt. I’m… I haven’t felt this happy in…” I swallowed thickly. “A really long time. Ever.”

Holt made a soft sound in his throat and cupped my face to lift it, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “Me either. You make me happy too, Taylor. I…”

He hesitated, expression growing vulnerable, then pulled me into a tight hug and pressed his lips to my hair.

“You’re amazing,” I heard him mumble. “I care about you. So much.”

My heart thudded harder in my chest. Before I could respond, he pulled back and gave me a wobbly grin.

“Want to go see your new office?”

I perked up with excitement. “It’s already set up?”

“Pretty much.” Holt grabbed my hand and led me toward the door. “I’ll add the finishing touches this week while you’re relaxing in my hot tub.”

He grinned over at me, and I grinned back, unable to believe how much my life had changed in the last few weeks. All thanks to a chance encounter with a careless fae assistant who’d mistaken me for a supernatural stripper.

Said careless fae assistant opened the door from the hallway just before we could reach it. He eyed us both warily, but said, “Seb could hear that you were done.”

My face flamed red, but Holt just rolled his eyes. “So sorry to tear you away from your work, Lark.”

“It’s cool.” Larkin shuffled past us, heading for his desk. “We went and, uh, checked out Taylor’s new office.”

We? I eyed him with suspicion, which he seemed to notice, because his cheeks flushed dark blue and he blurted, “Me. I meant… me went and checked it out. I did.”

Before either of us could respond, he forced out a carefree laugh and said, “Woah, sorry, bros. I’m a little drunk.”

“What?” Holt stared at him in disbelief. “You’re drunk? It’s not even ten a.m., Larkin. On a Tuesday. At the office.”

Which was perhaps a little hypocritical, considering how drunk we’d got in the office just last night.

“No, no. Not, like, literally drunk,” Larkin rushed out, nervous gaze darting to the door behind us. “Just drunk on… the feeling of a job well done. From being the best assistant you’ve ever had.”

Holt finally seemed to notice something was up, because he cocked his head and stared hard at his assistant. “What’s wrong with you? You feel weird. Like you’re… trying to shield your emotions. For the first time ever.”

“No, I’m not.” Larkin scowled, flopping down into his desk chair. “And if I was, I’m allowed to do that.”

Exhaling wearily, Holt held up his hand and turned us for the door. “Sure, okay. I’m showing Taylor his new office.”
