“What?” Arrow says, his voice cracking in only a way we can hear.

Havoc’s face is turning red as he eyes the phone like he might smash it to pieces.

“You heard me,child. You took two people I loved from this world. I plan to repay you for that. After all, it can’t be that hard. One of my mercenaries already got to your girl. It’s too bad she didn’t make it back here. We would have had so much fun.”

Arrow’s hand shakes, so I grip it tighter to ground him.

“Who do you mean?”

He’s testing her because there’s only one time someone had me, and it was a few months ago when we were trying to take down Adrik.

“Oh, well it's Barbie herself, the ever sweet and charming Laney DeLuca.”

My face pales. I feel all of the color draining from my whole body as she admits that bit of information out loud. The kidnapping attempt wasn’t Adrik.

It was Arrow’s mother.

Chapter 17

Laney immediately ran out to go talk to Evie. If it wasn’t such a short drive, and if we didn’t already have two cars following her with four fully armed men, then there’s no way in hell we would have let her leave. But I could see Arrow needed time to process. And I needed to hit something.

Things were supposed to be getting better and now this? What the fuck?

I punch the bag in front of me until my hands are numb and sweat drenches my shirt. I hate the feeling of wet fabric, so I tear it off, literally, and throw it to the floor beside me.

F.Y.U.by Kai Wachi blares in my headphones as I lay into the bag until my muscles nearly give out. Strong arms wrap around me from behind. I turn to see Arrow holding onto me like a lifeline. Removing my ear buds, I let them fall to the ground along with my gloves, then pull him close.

“What are we going to do?” His voice is shaky, nothing like the man I’ve come to know.

“Kill her, obviously.” I try to pretend I’m not as bothered by this as he is, but the truth is, there was something familiar about that voice. Something that had my brain on high alert. There’s still a sense, a niggling in the back of my mind telling me to take this threat seriously. As if I wouldn’t take any threat against my girl or my man to the depths of hell, but still.

Arrow pulls away, running a hand through his hair.

“I’m serious. If she was tied to the woman that took Laney she has power. After all we have done to get here, I can’t lose her.”

“And you think I can?” I grab his arms and pull him close so we are eye to eye. “That girl is my world. You both are my whole fucking world. I will slaughter thousands of people to protect you both. So don’t sit here and talk to me like you’re giving up.”

His pained eyes meet mine. “I’m not giving up. I’m scared of losing the two of you.”

“Good,” I say, taking a step back to grab the towel on the chair beside us. “Use that fear to fuel your rage, and you’ll be unstoppable.”

“Is that what you were doing just now?” He lifts a brow at me in a challenge.

“No, baby. If I had to turn all of my fear into rage, that bag wouldn’t be hanging from the ceiling.”

I walk to the back of the gym, grab a fresh shirt, and slide it over my head. I have a plan. While it may be stupid, it’s better than sitting here hoping something happens. I need to move, to do something to expel this energy.

“Let’s go, we’ve got some assholes to lure out.”

Arrow jogs up to my side, following me in my determined steps.

“How do you plan to do that?” He takes my hand in his as if signifying we are walking into battle together.

He’s so damn cute sometimes.

“Easy. We just have to go to a place where they can easily track us and make sure not to be within firing range of a sniper.”

As I open the door to the armory, Arrow pauses, looking awestruck at the extensive knife collection I have on the wall. A lot of them E and I made together, others are collectables from around the world.
