Page 40 of Arrow to my Heart

A loud bang echoes through the room and I smile, my unhinged assassin mask slips on in an instant.

Okay, maybe it’s less of a mask and more just my face, but I practiced this look in the mirror for a long time to perfect it. These bastards deserve to die looking up at my crazy ass face.

“Talk after, babe. Time to show your mother how we aren’t easily messed with.”

Arrow stands and readies his bow, drawing back and lining the scope up just as three men burst through the doors. Withouthesitation, he releases the bowstring, effectively embedding an arrow straight through the heart of our enemy.

One down, two to go.

I line my scope up with the one on the right as he jumps down behind a chair. I anticipated the move though, so I’m able to land a bullet in his skull before he hits the ground.

“Want to make a bet?” I ask, pushing open the door.

“This is hardly the time for games.”

I look at him like he’s crazy. This is the perfect time for games. What the fuck?

He gives me an exasperated sigh, which I take as an ‘of course I want to play a game, almighty Havoc’.

“Whoever gets the last guy gets to try the new anal plugs we got on the other two tonight.”

Arrow’s eyes widen with a mischievous grin. “That’s a deal, brother.”

We make our way out of the bunker, he goes left while I go right. I didn’t see where the last man went, but he’s here somewhere. Staying low as we circle the chairs I search for a lurking body. Something feels off though. As Arrow and I meet at the back with no hired hitman in sight, worry settles into my gut.

The sound of a board creaking above us greets my ears right as a man jumps from behind a curtain at Arrow’s back. I’m so stunned I hardly have time to raise my gun to react. Before I can pull the trigger, an arrow sticks right between his eyes and through his neck, effectively severing his brain stem.

We look around in confusion at first before spotting a blonde figure jumping down from the balcony. Then admiration takes us over. Our girl always has our backs.

“Did you really put Evie on babysitting duty withme?” She flips her hair as she stands to her full height and walks towards us.

“You were upset,” I say. “We were just giving you time to process.”

She glares at me, then her gaze shifts to Arrow, trying not to make eye contact with the pool of blood gathering under the three dead men in front of us.

“You good?” He’s still frozen, his eyes glued to the floor in front of him. Sweat covers his face.

To be honest, if Laney wasn’t here, he might actually be dead right now. I look away from them both, mentally scolding myself for not thinking about the damn curtains.

Locking my jaw, I shove the door open to leave, but a spray of bullets hits inches from my feet. I grab the comms from my pocket and put it in my ear. I clearly forgot to do this while Arrow and I were talking.

“What’s going on out there?”

“We have two men down, three active. I can see four enemy shooters from here. What do you want us to do?”

Fucking shit on a brick are you kidding me? Who can afford to send seven hitmen?

“We’ve taken down four targets, sir, but the remaining have the advantage.”

Eleven. This woman sent eleven fucking hitmen? Wait, plus the three in the church.

“Stand down. Get the bodies of the men who fell back to the estate, but tread carefully. Use the C route.”

“What about you?”

“We’ll use the tunnels.”

I storm back to Laney and Arrow. Color is returning to his face now, so that’s a plus.
