Facing each other now, each touch seared with longing, they explored softly. Down her arm to her waist, his thumb skated lightly over the tight nubs of her breasts, and he reveled in the feel of her soft breasts against his chest. His fingers brushed down her spine, over her behind, then grabbed behind her leg. Draping her knee over his hip, he pushed further inside of her, holding her to him like she would escape. Wrapped in each other’s arms, she lifted to meet his unhurried thrusts, matching his rhythm, and driving him wild.

Low and slow, he brought her to the brink, where her moans became breathy and long. When she finally gripped his arm, burying her face in his chest as she came, his own pleasure convulsed through him, and he groaned long and hard. Chest to chest, on their side, they lay without moving for the longest time, refusing to allow it to end or to even pull apart. He slid his hand from her ass where he’d been holding her, to find her hand in his, fingers intertwined as they breathed in the other. Her sunny blonde hair was spread over the pillow, and her eyes were dark and wild as she stared at him, still panting as their hearts slowed. He spent several moments memorizing every curve and angle ofher face, waiting for her eyes to return to the ocean blue he loved so much. He never wanted this moment to end, hoping he could hold onto it forever.

But that wasn’t reality. Wasn’t how their lives worked.

Eventually, she rose from the bed, disappearing into the bathroom, and he moved to get dressed. He hesitated to go downstairs without her but decided to make a separate entrance. In the kitchen, he realized that was unneeded. The room was empty, and he shook his head. He couldn’t believe Axel wasn’t up yet. So, he pulled some fruit from the fridge, toasted some bread, and added some cheese chunks to a plate. When she appeared a few minutes later, they took it to go.

She had her suitcase and backpack ready, and he only hesitated a moment, processing that today was her last day, before loading it into her trunk, then following her to the training arena in his own truck. They still hadn’t said a word to each other until they reached the stables, standing awkwardly at the doors.

“So, Z said he’d meet me here in an hour. I was going to help Braulio turn the horses out to pasture until he gets here. Unless you need me?”

He looked up, catching her eye, then nodded towards the tack room. He knew she was waiting for permission, waiting for some sign from him, and that’s all it took. She grinned at him, slapped him on the ass when she walked by, and made her way to the tack room. “Just how I like my man, bossy yet silent.”

Side-by-side, they worked to prep everything for the day, and he tried to focus on the task at hand. He had a lot to do on his last day as head trainer, needed to get everything organized and written down for his replacement. Every time he turned, she was there, already anticipating his next move, and after a while he stopped to stare at her, hands on his hips.

“Okay, I’ll admit it. You catch on quick. A natural.”

“Don’t be so surprised. Also, I had a good teacher.” She smiled sweetly at him, and for a second, he thought she was up to something, but shook the feeling off.Once Zhair showed up with Lana by his side, they all disappeared, leaving him with Braulio and a long list of things he needed to get done.

The morning flew by, and he expected her to go eat lunch with the other ranch hands, but she had already set up sandwiches and was chatting away with Lana when he walked up.

“You’re going to have to get away from Tuisa. There’s no other way. These chickenshits are never going to risk your dad, or hell, Makaii’s wrath by dating you.”

“Who are you telling? I swear, if I didn’t know I looked good, I would think I was the ugly stepsister no one wanted. Endo was so nervous the whole time. Thought he was going to get ambushed.”

“I have to give him props though. A projector at the beach in the back of his truck. That’s my kind of movie night.”

Lana glanced at him nervously when he sat across from her and next to Bailey. “Don’t you go snitching, Nas. Or you’ll become my least favorite cousin. I want to have a little fun once in a while, and it shouldn’t be this hard.”

“Considering me and Alex are your only cousins, I’m not worried.”

“Either way, the point is, my brothers and you got to do whatever and whoever you wanted your whole life, and that’s annoying. I can’t get my first kiss without going to insane lengths. The guys around here don’t want me.”

He grunted at that. “Good.”

Bailey slapped his thigh. “No, not good. Not fair. I’m going to talk to Ava. Maybe she can convince Axel to let you come over to the Aisling gym and train. You know…for research purposes. It’s like a candy shop over there, and no one will know who you are. It’s perfect for you to mingle.”

No way Axel was going to let his only daughter, at eighteen, go over to another pack without supervision. So, he ignored that threat and picked up the sandwich in front of him.

“Thanks for getting this together.”

“No worries. I made Zhair do it anyway. He should be back any minute.”

Taking a bite of his sandwich, he cocked his eyebrow at the fresh pickle jar sitting in the middle of the table.

“I found my pickles. I’m assuming they are mine since they were labeled with your name, and I know you don’t eat pickles.”

He nodded nonchalantly, but the idea of her eating his jar of pickles made him inexplicably happy. So, when Zhair came back, he was in a good mood. But that quickly turned.

“Bunch of the guys want to be here when you work Ursula together. They want to see what Bailey could actually do. She’s been bragging non-stop that Ursula’s a lamb with her. I think…that they think she’s full of shit, and there’s no way she tamed the meanest beast of the land. Both beasts really.” Zhair grinned at him, proud of his little jab, but they both ignored him.

“No. No audience. Too many people will spook Ursula, and I’m not risking it with Bailey near her.”

“Zhair, tell them they are welcome to come. I’m confident in the training we’ve done this week and all my accomplishments. I work better with an audience anyway. Fuddy-duddy will be fine.”

He sighed hard. Finishing up his sandwich, he crumbled the napkin into a ball. She couldn’t just listen one time, could she?

“Fine. But I’m going to work with her first, see how her temperament is. Then we will go from there. No unnecessary risks.”
