What else did he have anymore? He would go back to his office job, occasionally flying Ava and Makaii around the country to do Alliance work. He would hang out with Theo and Simon, but they were getting older and didn’t need him.

And now, his parents were going to retire and possibly leave the pack. All without telling him. Keoni was on the mate tour, and once the stalker was caught, he knew Isaiah would leverage the mission for permission to go back with Keoni as himself. And Makaii had his new family and would take over the pack soon.

Where did that leave him?

Everything was changing whether he liked it or not. He wouldn’t go on the mate tour. He couldn’t just hang out with his friends or family anymore. What exactly did he want to do?This is what Bailey meant. He had no life here, not inside Tuisa or anywhere. He had nothing else to live for, to do.

“Nas? Nas? Earth to Nas.”

Lana snapped in front of his face, and he blinked rapidly. “Maybe you could join the boys on the road. Have you thought of that?”

He scowled at that thought. He didn’t want anything to do with their shenanigans at these parties. Hell, he barely kept them in line here inside the pack. Out in the world, unsupervised, he could only imagine what they were doing paired up with Aisling warriors.

“No.”

“Well. You need to do something to get your mind off all this. Moping around this pack for years will get you nowhere. This is exactly why Bailey didn’t want to tell you. You’re proving her right.”

“Lana Blackwolf. Watch your mouth.”

“Mom. We’re all thinking it. Well, some of us are. She knew you’d be happier not knowing. And look at you. Wallowing. I’m just saying. You need to find a hobby or something.”

“It’s only been a week. He needs time. She needs time. It will work itself out.”

Makaii growled out his defense of Nassau, and he felt grateful for his cousin. It helped Makaii had spent nine months trying to get over Ava after he initially rejected her, so this was hitting close to home.

“Fine. But he’s in this mess because all the men in this pack have no idea how to think big. There’s more to our world than these borders. And like Bailey, I’m going to see it, whether you like it or not.”

They all sat there, stunned at Lana. She had risen from the table angry, and when she finished her speech, she walked upstairs, ignoring her brother’s demands to come back.

Nubia didn’t move, only waited for Makaii to meet her eye. “Mmmh. Mmmh. Mmmh. I been telling your father, things are gonna blow in this pack. Lid been on the steamer too long. You’re gonna be the one cleaning up the mess.”

Makaii sighed deeply. “I know. I was hoping he would relax a little before I took over, but—” Makaii paused mid-sentence, waiting while someone linked him. “Well. Knew that was going to happen. Is Dad here?”

“He’s in the office. What’s going on?”

“Ava just came back from the other realm. She’s going to talk to her Beta, then she wants to see Dad.” He nonchalantly played with Kuraii, tickling him as he spoke. “Did he really give an Alpha command for you to mark Bailey by force?”

“Yes.”

“And he told Bailey she couldn’t leave Tuisa, and that she belonged to him and not Ava now?”

“Yes.”

Makaii cursed under his breath. “Mom, is he losing his mind? Is he praying for a full-scale fight with my mate? Did he forget the last time he pissed Ava off?”

“What he didn’t forget was how miserable you were without your mate. He was trying to prevent that for Nassau.”

“Or Ava could have said something. She let Bailey keep this secret for months. Shifter law says—” Nassau tried to defend his uncle, desperate for Makaii to understand.

“Seriously, Nas? You’re sound like my dad, and not in a good way. You’re the logical one here. Ava’s going to get here and lose her shit, and I’m not going to stop her. He gets what he gets. If Ava wasn’t the Alpha, if it was anyone else, would he have done that?”

“Not without risking a fight. You’re right, baby. He let his emotions run him. But you weren’t there.” Nubia glanced at him in pity. “I’m not condoning it, but…Nassau was devastated. Bailey was stressed. Neither one of them were thinking straight. Your dad thought it would just solve everything.”

“Steel yourself. She’s coming and I can feel how angry—”

When Ava transported into the room, hands on her hips, there was an immediate wave of heat and anger rippling off her. “Where’s Axel?”

Makaii stood, carrying Kuraii over to her. “Say hi to mommy. She’s missed you so much.”
