“Promise?”

“Yes, girl.”

When Ava disappeared, she was left standing in the street, alone for the first time in weeks. But it felt good. She was tired of putting on a smile or breaking down in tears. It was exhausting. Right now, she just wanted to get back in the groove. She needed a schedule, a goal. Last weekend, she had missed out on working when her heat had come on suddenly.

She had anticipated it, talked to Ava’s mom about it. But when it came, it was so much stronger than she thought it would be. She didn’t know how Ava went for hours like that last year. So, when they had taken her to the other realm, she had almost collapsed in relief.

What she hadn’t anticipated was the complete severance of their connection. The emptiness in her soul haunted her, and her wolf turned away from her. It’s like her beast had gone to sleep and refused to wake up. Refused to have anything to do with her anymore.

She hadn’t told anyone that. Only decided that this feeling was what she would have to live with. But it was lonely. Without her best friend, her parents and her Rathlin family surrounding her, she felt alone without Nassau, and without her wolf.

She carried everything upstairs, started her loads of laundry, then sat down to work. When party time came around, headphones on, voice changer app in place, she worked for hours.

Isaiah did a great job pretending to be her. Well, her in her wild days from a year ago. He was funny, outrageous, and very flirty. He kept everyone laughing, and people loved the character she had made for the face of the channel on her end. Sunny Hunny was a hit.

Once the night was over, and Isaiah headed back up to the hotel room, Keoni behind him, Gio missing, and Travis still making his rounds, she called them on speaker to get a better briefing.

“That was great. If he isn’t pulled out of hiding tonight, I don’t know what else to do. I have to say, Isaiah. You have absolutely surprised me. You’re a natural Bailey.”

“I can’t believe you doubted me. Also…as soon as I get my body back, I’m gonna kill it with the ladies. This was the ultimate insider’s view. Axel promised I could come back on the tour as myself once we catch him. There will be records created and smashed in my name.”

“Mmmh. I bet. I’m thinking that will be sooner than you think. I’ll be back on the road next weekend. Ava agreed I could leave.”

There was silence on the line, and she checked to see if it had been disconnected. “Hello? You there?”

“We’re here.”

“Are you…are you coming alone?”

“Pretty sure. Ava said she would have extra protection for me. So, I’m not completely certain.”

Keoni’s tone was harsh and straightforward. “So, Nassau had no chance. You promised.”

She flushed in anger but took a deep breath before answering him. “I promised I would try not to hurt him. I’m not changing who I am or what I want. That’s more unfair to both of us in the long run.”

“Does he know you’re leaving?”

“It’s none of his business. I rejected him. It’s over. He can choose a mate or look for a second-chance mate. That’s on him.” She snapped at Keoni, annoyed at having to explain herself. “He needs to accept the rejection, but he refuses. He’s being stubborn.”

“He’s the one being stubborn? That’s harsh, Bailey. And you know it.”

She rubbed her temples, warding off the headache Keoni’s questions brought on. “Keoni. It’s none of your business. It’s not easy on me either. Stop acting like I’m just doing this for fun. It will take time, but he will forget about me. He will move on. But I need all you fuckers to move on too. You Tuisa men can’t get things through your thick skulls.”

“He’s my cousin and friend. What did you expect?”

She softened her voice. “I get it. Trust me. I wish things were different, but they’re not. Monday morning, I will have Cass take away the spell, and I will be on the road to you. You don’t want to stick around with me anymore, I get it. No hard feelings. I can travel alone.”

“Cass will go back to Rathlin too?” Isaiah sounded strange, almost sad at that thought.

“That’s up to her. And hey, I really, really appreciate everything you’ve done. I’m absolutely gonna give you some spotlights and special attention on my channel. Your debut will be legendary. I won’t even tell people you have a small dick.”

She grinned when Keoni busted out laughing, and Isaiah’s loud ‘Hey!’ filled the room. There were several good-natured insults as they were saying their goodbyes, and she realized this was what she needed. She needed to laugh and be normal. No more people walking around on tiptoes like someone died.

“One more day as me, Isaiah, then you get your monster dick back.”

“No goat dick?”

“No goat dick. Promise.”
