It was almost noon when she woke up, and she took her time packing. This time, she took extra suitcases, plenty of outfits, all her electronics, and everything she could possibly need for months.

She had no plans to come back anytime soon.

However long it took, and whatever it took, she would get over him. On her own. And she would make a life for herself far away. Slowly, she filled her Jeep full, every nook and cranny filled with her stuff. So, when she was ready to go, she linked Ava.

“Hey. I’m all packed up. I know you have stipulations. Lay them on me.”

“I’m on my way.”

Within seconds, Ava stood in front of her, red curls flying in the chilly December wind. They both stared at each other for a long time without speaking. Her best friend was beautiful, strong, confident. Everything that Bailey pretended to be.

So, when Ava’s ice-blue eyes pierced her soul, she knew her Alpha understood she wasn’t coming back.

“I was hoping I’d see a small suitcase. That you’d be back for the holidays at least.”

“You know better than that.”

Ava sighed heavily. “Yeah, I do. I knew this day was coming, but it didn’t make it any easier. You’ll come back to visit sometimes, right?”

“Eventually. Or you could come to me. I’ll find somewhere by the beach. Maybe California. It’s where all the human influencers are. I’d fit right in.”

“You’re more than an influencer. Don’t act like that’s all you’re doing. You’re going to be the greatest journalist shifters have ever known. You’re blazing a path.”

“I hope so. I want it to all be worth it.”

“You act like we won’t see each other. I still need you to do a shit ton of news coverage for the Alliance. I’ll pick a go-between from another pack as a correspondent, then you will be reporting all our movements. I want to be as transparent as possible once we are fully in place. I’ll definitely need all the threats broadcasted. The vamps have been quiet so far, but I know they’re going to act up soon. Your channel is going to be instrumental in bringing us all together.”

“Yeah. I’m really excited about that part. The mate tour can get boring. I need real news again.”

“Maybe go pack to pack and do interviews or whatnot. You have all the ideas. I’ll clear the path for you.”

“Yeah.”

“What you’re doing is important. Not just that it’s important to you, but it’s important for our world.”

“Thanks, bestie. I love you.”

They hugged for a long time, and when Ava pulled back, she held up a small bracelet. Several stones tinkled together in a variety of colors. “Don’t ask what each one does, but the strongest witches in Rathlin each contributed some magic, including me. And this last one, it’s clear. It’s waiting for Cassandra. She’s going to leave you an escape to her room. Smash it, and you’ll be transported to her sex dungeon of horrors. She will know you’re there and boom. Straight to you, wherever she is.”

“Oh wow. So, I’m basically Captain Planet. I got fire, water, earth, wind, sex dungeon…”

They both burst out laughing as Ava tightened the clasp on her wrist. “Promise to keep it on at all times?”

“I promise. And after you catch this crazy fucker, I’m keeping this forever. I’ll be indestructible.”

“That’s the idea.”

Ava smirked, then opened the driver’s door for her. “Your very packed chariot awaits. You said goodbye to your parents?”

“Yup. My mom promised to come visit me wherever I am at least once a month. I had to promise to go to Italy with her once a year.”

“Then you’re all set. See you soon and be safe on the road. You have a security detail waiting for you at the exit. They will follow you until you reach Travis and Gio.”

Ava stepped back on the curb, waving as she started up the Jeep. Searching for her glasses, she flipped down the visor, and an envelope fell into her lap, her name scrawled across the front. She frowned, wondering where this came from, and hoping it wasn’t left by the psychotic stalker. But as she opened the single sheet of paper inside, she realized it was something much more important.

Bailey, my wild thing,
