“Nassau, please. I need more.”

Her words broke through the fog, and he paused, closing his eyes as she clawed his back. “I’m not Isaiah.”

“Thank the Goddess. I don’t want Isaiah. Never have. Only you. I want you, Nas.”

His voice was hoarse, and he swallowed before stopping her. “I…”

Ignoring him, she trailed her tongue around the outside of his ear, groaning.“Just one night. I can promise you a good time. Then we can get it out of our system and move on.”

When her mouth moved to his neck, he almost gave in. “No. Not like this.”

He cupped her face in his hands, staring into the darkened eyes of her wolf. “You are more than a good time, and I want more. I want to know you. I want to take you on dates, spend time with you. More than one night.”

The longer he spoke, the more her eyes lightened back to her normal stormy blue, and she blinked rapidly. “I…I can’t. One night is me. It’s who I am. I don’t have more to give.”

For the longest time, they were locked in, just staring until he pulled away. He couldn’t do one night with her. He knew that. She just needed to figure it out.

“Then this ends now.”

Eyes wide, the pleading and desire clear on her face, he turned away and moved towards the packhouse. When she didn’t follow, he turned back, holding out his hand and setting his face to stone.

She took it reluctantly, and they moved along, waiting for the unsuspecting guards to turn the next corner, then they took off running. They had barely made it to the back porch before the next guard rounded the opposing corner.

“Nassau? Is that you?”

He nodded, then walked toward the guard, like they were leaving the house instead of walking up. “Ah yes. She wanted some fresh air, so I came to accompany her. Was going to sit on the porch for a second, but now that we’re out here, I think she should stay inside.”

The guard nodded, unsure but trusting him, so he pulled the door open for her, not saying a word as the guard moved on. She passed through the doorway, but stopped and turned back to him, biting her lip.

“Could you stay with me? I mean, sleep? Nothing else? I haven’t slept since Saturday when…” She flushed at that admission, and he would have smirked if he wasn’t so unreasonably frustrated with her, with the situation, and feelings he didn’t understand. “I mean, having you there made me feel safe. Haven’t been able to sleep for a while.”

He didn’t answer her, unsure of what to say, and she trailed off, then turned to go inside. “Nevermind. Good night, Nassau.”

Before he could think about all the reasons this was a bad idea, he followed her inside, closing the door behind them. Upstairs, she used the restroom first, changing out of her panties and bra, and putting on a tiny silken pajama set, and he breathed a sigh of relief that she was out of the enticing lingerie. Except her pajamas were not any better. His eyes were drawn to how her breasts bounced freely, her nipples grazing against the silky material as she slid into the bed. Shit, this was not going to work.

“You going to undress and get in the bed?”

Instead of following her, he took a deep breath and sat in the chair, only untucking his shirt and kicking off his boots. Minutes went by, her soft breathing the only sound between them until she spoke.

“Guess I’ll push through one more sleepless night. Don’t ask why I’m cranky tomorrow. If I push you in front of a raging bull, you’ll know why.”

He smiled into the dark, then moved without thinking, and after yanking off his shirt, he dropped his jeans to the floor and slid into the bed.

Pulling her close, she relaxed against him, her back to his chest and breathing deeply, she whispered a soft, “Thank you” before falling asleep.

He closed his own eyes and tried to ignore her soft body pressed against his, concentrating instead on the sense of comfort he drew from her.

“Anything for you, wild thing.”

Chapter 14

Thursday, November 18

6:40 a.m.

The knocking on the door barely permeated her groggy mind, and she ignored it, hoping they’d go away. But when she heard Keoni’s voice, she jerked awake, her arm swinging behind her to wake Nassau. But he was gone, and Keoni walked through the door, flopping on the end of the bed dramatically.

“No, go ahead, walk right in and make yourself comfortable. Hopefully, I’m not in here completely naked.”
