“Wait. Keoni knows?” Isaiah’s jaw dropped.

“Uh. Knows what? What do you know?” Keoni looked over at Isaiah and back at Bailey. “You told Isaiah?”

“She didn’t tell me. I figured it out back in Cass’s torture chamber. I just didn’t know who it was until Zhair texted me.”

“Fuck. You two are the worst people to know this information. And you don’t know shit. Just shut the fuck up. It’s complicated.”

“You’re the only one making it complicated, Bai. He’d do anything for you if he knew.”

“That’s the problem. I don’t want him to. I don’t want him to give up his life for me, and I’m not giving up mine. So, unless you want to stay my body double forever, you better keep your damn mouth shut.”

“Did you hear someone who can’t get their life together say something to you, Isaiah?”

“Why no, Keoni. I didn’t hear anything. Just the empty threats of a chickenshit, thousands of miles away.”

Their mock conversation only served to piss her off. “Keep it up, and remember, Cassandra doesn’t need a reason to burn your shit. One word from me, and she’ll do it happily.”

Their smiles didn’t disappear, but Isaiah mimed zipping his lips and throwing away the key before holding up his hands in the shape of a heart.

Keoni shrugged. “You fucked. That means if you reject him now, it’s going to be so much worse. Just tell him. You’ll figure it all out.”

“You don’t get it. For him, if I tell him, it will hurt him worse. I can’t look him in the eyes and break him. And I couldn’t resist anymore. I could barely stay away when I didn’t know which one of those two it was. At least now, we’ll have this time together before I leave.”

“Keep telling yourself that. You won’t be able to.”

“Wait. Which one of who was what?”

They both ignored Isaiah’s question. She had zero desire to give that little detail away. His ego would never deflate.

“I can and will. This is not the life for either of us, and you know it.” She paused, surprised either of them could stay silent long enough for her to think. “You know him. You know how traditional he is. He’s not like either of you. I know he wants kids and a normal life. Not a mate running around the country as a fake journalist, giving news on who’s fucking who at mating parties.”

“Come on. You know you do more than that.”

“Not in other people’s eyes. And not in his. He is going to think I’m rejecting him, and that’s not what I’m doing. I am choosing a different life for both our sake. We are too different. The Moon Goddess got this wrong.”

“Did you learn nothing from Ava and Makaii? The Moon Goddess doesn’t get these things wrong. Seriously? We can’t keep repeating the same mistakes. There’s a reason you were both meant to be together, no matter how opposite you are.”

“They were different. They wanted the same things; they just couldn’t see it. I see everything, and I’m not the right person forhim. Clearly, he wants kids and a picket fence. I don’t have any plans on reproducing. Ever.”

“Then maybe you should stay away from him. He’s going to keep getting attached. I saw it when I was there. You thought I was obsessed with you? He was way worse. He just doesn’t act on his impulses. He followed you to the park to watch you fuck me.”

“Wait. What about your heat? Isn’t that what happened to Ava and Makaii?”

“I was afraid of that too, but me and Ava think I won’t go into heat unless his wolf recognizes mine. Like a trigger.”

“And you’re okay fighting the mate bond your whole life?”

“I don’t know, but I have to try.”

“Well, it kinda sounds fucked up. You think he’s going to wait around until you’re forty when you decide you’re ready to settle down?”

“No. He will choose a mate eventually. You know he will. But he won’t if he knows I’m out there. Just one more reason I can’t tell him. He won’t choose someone, thinking he could still have me.”

“Maybe.”

“And…honestly. I don’t think I’m strong enough to resist if he knew. I can barely resist now without him knowing. If both mate bonds click into place, I think I would give in. I need to get out of here as soon as possible. So, you need to shake your ass and catch the Psycho. The faster you do that, the less likely your friend will get hurt. Keep that in mind.”

Neither of them looked convinced, and the look they gave each other annoyed her.
