Yelling into the void made her feel better. At this point, anything had to help with the rush of emotions steaming through her. She crumpled the note angrily, chunking it at the closest wall, where it only bounced softly and tumbled to the ground. Panic threatened, and the fear that she would never be free of him took over.

Close to hysteria, she screamed into the void of her room until tears ran down her face. She couldn’t do this, couldn’t let this happen. She was in control, nobody else. “Seriously. Fuck you. You don’t get to take my life from me. No. I won’t allow you to take me. I won’t allow you to scare me into hiding. Fuck you. You don’t get to do this.”

Before she’d even finished raging, the loud stampede of feet up her stairs broke through her conscious just as four shifters burst through the door, grabbing her from behind, and pulling her against one of them. Bear hugged and held against the wall, another moved to stand in front of her while the other two circled the room.

Terror chilled her blood, and she freaked out when a hand clamped over her mouth, stifling her scream.

Chapter 20

Saturday, November 20

3:35 p.m.

It happened so fast, she didn’t know whether she should scream or cry when they all started yelling out orders, clearing the upper floor of her house. Smushed between two bodies, it took her a few seconds to realize it was her guards. They were searching the house, looking for the stalker.

Was he here still? Did they see him? For once, she stayed silent while they worked, hoping they’d find him in a closet, or hidden in a shower, and this could all be over. She had been sure he left out the window, but they must have seen something, right?

“Room’s clear.”

“Bathroom clear.”

“Closet clear.”

The muffled sounds of others entering every other room on the floor added to the chaos, and she pulled at the arm tightening across her chest, unnerved by the feeling of being trapped between the two men, and unable to see.

At least a full minute went by as the house was searched, the stomping and door slams muffled, before the warrior behind herspoke as he moved his hand from her mouth. It was Frank. “Did you see which way he went? What’s he wearing?”

She was so confused, but she shook her head, swallowing hard. “I didn’t see him. Just the notes…where was he?”

He didn’t answer her at first, and because all their movements were coordinated without speaking, she knew they were mindlinking without her. “Hello? What’s happening?”

“Where was he when you were yelling at him?”

Finally, in the growing silence as they cleared the whole house, she whispered, “Can you let me go now? He’s not in here.”

“Negative. I need your answer, so we know where to look. Where did he go? We heard your yelling.”

“I wasn’t yelling at a person… just frustrated in general.” It finally clicked that her outburst is why they ran in. Not that they saw him. So, she was right that he’d gone out the window when she was downstairs.

“That’s why you busted in here? Because I was yelling? I was just mad, getting my frustrations out. I can’t go to the gym, can’t go for a run. I was just yelling to feel better. Now let me go. I have no desire to be a Bailey sandwich.”

She pushed on the back smushing her, but the other guy didn’t move. So, she tried pulling on Frank’s arm that was trapping her to his body. “Let go. He’s not here.”

There was a slight pause before the arm imprisoning her loosened, and the warrior who’d trapped her against Frank turned to face her, his eyes still scanning the room for an invisible attack. They weren’t listening to her, but a quick elbow to Frank’s stomach, and he finally released her.

“What the fuck. How did you even hear me from outside?”

He glanced over at her, not a bit of shame. “We have audio in the hallways and by the doors. Beta Nicholas ordered it just in case.”

“AUDIO?! You have fucking audio? Was anyone going to tell me that you were invading my fucking privacy? Has everyone lost their mind around here?”

Putting her hands on her hips as Frank moved back to the hallway, she continued yelling at him as he walked away, until she realized he was giving orders for the different warriors to station themselves in the hallways permanently. She switched her focus real fast. Like hell they would do that.

“Might as well pull up a cot next to my bed. I can get a chair for you in my bathroom as well. Hold my hand while I take a shit. Why don’t you guys just carry me from place to place?”

“It’s next on the list. If Ava was here, you think it would be any different? We knew he was still here. He’s been leaving little signs, just waiting for you. The plan was to bring you back here and bait him into making a move. See once and for all if he’d left the pack or not. Tuisa Alpha’s idea. He thought for sure today would be the day.” Frank continued to give orders before back turning to her. “He wasn’t in here? You’re sure?”

“Did you see him with your eyes? Cuz I didn’t.” She crossed her arms stubbornly, so pissed that she wasn’t told about this plan. No wonder Axel had pushed for her to come back.
