“You are stronger than you think.” He pauses. “But I understand.”

“I should go out there.” I say softly, wiping at a single tear that rolls down my cheek.

“Yeah.” He nods.

fourteen

I walk outof the room, fighting the urge to break down in tears. I would go cover my tracks. I’d get wicked wasted to cover up why I threw up. It is also a good distraction from the pain.

The backstage area is clearing out. The crew is taking down the stage equipment now. I turn around and walk back to the bathroom. There are only two girls in here now. I walk into an empty stall and close the door behind me.

I take a deep breath and do another bump, ignoring my already racing heart and jittery hands. It’s been a long day.

I walk out of the stall and head to the sink. The two girls in there are touching up their makeup but look over at me.

“Nice set.”

“Thank you.”

“Are you dating Wesley?” The other one asks.

“No.” I dry my hands. “Have a good night.”

I head outside. The cool air feels nice, and I wander to the space betweenKey Failures’andHaunting Memories’buses, where there are a group of people hanging out.

There is some music playing and a bunch of bottles of alcohol. I pick up a bottle of vodka and take a sip. I wanderaround, nodding to people I semi-know, but mostly, I keep to myself.

I miss Wes. I miss having his arm around me. I wonder where he is now. Is he off with Haley talking?

“Hey.” Ben comments as I pass by. “How is the amazing Abbey Dark tonight?”

“Just wonderful.” I respond sarcastically.

I couldn’t deal with Ben right now and his longing stares. It was too much, so I start to turn away.

“I saw your exchange with Haley.” I freeze. “She is seriously crazy.”

I nod and bite my lip, fighting back tears.

“Is she getting in the way of Wes and you?” I shrug. “Should I change the subject?” He smiles.

“Please.” I try not to scream, taking a sip from the bottle in my hands.

“You put on a great set tonight.”

“Thank you.”

I know he is just being nice. It wasn’t the best set of my career. Probably one of my worst, actually.

I take another sip from the bottle.

“Listen. Wes and Haley are long over. Yeah, he was a little crazy about her, but he never looked at her the way he looks at you.”

“Wes and I are over.”

I don’t want to spill the beans about Haley being pregnant. That isn’t my news to share, plus I don’t think I could get through that sentence without breaking down.

“Oh. I’m sorry to hear that.” His words say one thing, but that smile on his face doesn’t speak of someone who is sorry to hear something.
