“Yes.”

“And only.” Wes adds.

I take a sip of my water and another bite of my toast, staring at him.

“When is the next stop?” I ask.

“Soon. Why?” Sue asks.

“I’m just wondering when Wes is leaving.”

“I have a few calls to make. We are lucky no one has said anything yet. Luckily, Skylar signed the NDA, and you signed one for him, too, so remember that.” She points at me. “I’ll be back.” She says, getting up and walking down to her bunk.

“Thank you for taking care of me.”

“I told you I’d always have your back.”

“Yeah.”

“Are you fucking him?” Wes asks, not looking at me. He pushes some of his dark curls out of his face, still avoiding eye contact as he waits for my answer.

Is that why he fucked that girl? Because he thinks I’ve been fucking Skylar?

“No, we are just friends. I mean, he kissed me once but that’s it. We are just friends.”

“I want you to stop hanging out with him.”

“What? Why?”

“He shot you full of fucking heroin, Abbey. He isn’t a good friend.”

“It’s not your place to tell me who to be friends with.”

“No. It isn’t. But if you care about me at all, you will stop hanging out with him and you’ll never do heroin again.”

“Wes.”

“If you care about me, Abbey, you won’t become a junkie.”

“It was one time.”

“I know you. I know how it probably made you feel. I know you’ll want to do it again.”

“I was never going to do it, but I saw you kiss her.” I say.

He looks at me in shock. He opens his mouth to speak but quickly closes it, just looking at me.

“It’s not your fault. I want you to move on. It just hurt, and I desperately wanted not to hurt anymore.” I add.

“I’m sorry. I thought about you the whole time. It made me miss you even more. I’ve been dying seeing you hanging out with Skylar, not knowing if you were a couple or fucking. And all the rumors of you two together, it was killing me. I’ve been in pain, too, and desperate for just a few minutes of peace. I tried to escape it, too. That was all I was doing.” He touches my leg.

“Fucking someone instead of shooting up.”

“Yeah. But I’m still sorry. I was hoping you wouldn’t see.”

“Were there others?”

“No.” He shakes his head.
