“Yes.” I say and jump to my feet. “You can trust me.”

“Good. Go get changed.”

I walk down the bus, happy to have this time alone. I know better than to take my time, though. Sue will think I’m up to something. I quickly strip down and slide on a clean pair of underwear. I go with a black thong and a matching black bra. I put on a fresh tank top and a pair of cloth shorts. I’m going for comfort. Wes has seen me dressed up, and he has seen me sweats. I don’t need to impress him with what I wear.

I brush my teeth before putting on a dab of lip gloss and a spray of perfume before walking back to the common area.

Sue looks up at me. “That was quick.”

“Mmm. When is the next stop?” I ask. I’m eager to see Wes already.

“I don’t know.” She shrugs.

I spend the next two hours waiting for the bus to come to a stop. At first, I was pacing the bus, listening to music. Sue eventually yells at me to have a seat, or she will make me eat another sandwich. So, I sit and wait for the bus to stop.

It’s a little past five when the bus finally comes to a stop. I anxiously check my phone for a message from Wes, nervous about texting him first. I don’t want to come across as desperate, though I totally am.

“I’m going to McDonald’s. Do you want a burger or nuggets?” Sue asks.

“Nuggets.”

“Soda?”

“Diet Coke.” She makes a face. “I’ll eat a small fry too.” I protest before she can say something. “I just like the way diet tastes.”

“Okay. Go get some fresh air.”

I wait a minute after she exits the bus before sliding on a pair of shoes and exiting the bus.

Quite a few people are off their bus, smoking, talking, and enjoying the open air. I spot Wes leaning against his bus, smoking a cigarette, chatting with Ben. He sees me and nods, starting to walk over.

“Hey.” I notice he has a backpack over his shoulder. “I was just having a cigarette before coming over.”

“Sue is getting food. I should have her get you something.”

“She already asked me what I wanted. You look good.”

“So do you.” He was wearing jeans and a band tee, but he would look good in anything, or nothing. I shake that thought out of my head, and he raises an eyebrow. “Nothing.”

“Okay?” He repeats questioningly, putting out his cigarette and lighting another. “I don’t like smoking on buses. Want one?” I nod, and he hands me the one he just lit, lighting another as I inhale.

“How was the interview?”

“Good.” He pauses. “They asked about you.”

“Oh.” I shouldn’t be surprised, but I am. I didn’t want them asking him about me. I didn’t want them in our little bubble.

“They asked how touring with you was going. Then, of course, they asked if we were dating.” He laughs. “I said all good things, and I made sure they knew we were just friends.” He smiles.

“I missed you.” I whisper.

“I missed you too.” He puts his arm around my shoulder. “You feel good in my arms.”

We finish our cigarettes before walking onto my bus.

“So, do I have to ask for the bathroom key too?”

“Sue will probably give you the key to hold onto if you ask her. She is impressed with how well I’ve been behaving since meeting you.”
