I roll my eyes, and he shrugs.

“I think it’s a good idea.”

“Something friends would do?”

“Yes.” He nods. “Have I missed the last stop?”

“I don’t know.”

“I’m dying for a cigarette.”

“You can smoke here.”

“He can smoke in the front seat with the window rolled down.” Sue butts into the conversation.

“It’s my bus.” I retort, and she flashes me a look.

“I’ll smoke in the front seat. No biggie.” He says, standing to his feet.

He sets his coffee cup on the counter and moves to the front of the bus. He sits next to the driver in the passenger seat. I can hear him making small talk with the driver as he smokes.

I look over a few of the songs I wrote while he smokes through two cigarettes. He comes back and pours fresh coffee into his mug before taking a sit back down next to me. I shut my notebook.

“What?” He asks. “Are you shy about your writing?”

“No.”

“Then let me see.” He holds out his hand.

“No.” I say, and heat floods my cheeks. They were all about him and longing for him. I wasn’t ready for him to read them yet, or maybe ever. “Sue got me a room for the next two nights.” I change the subject.

“Did she?” He asks, pulling his hand away.

“She is choosing to trust me and let me have my own room.”

“Sounds nice.” He smiles.

“You can use my shower if you want.”

“I just might take you up on that. Been awhile since I had a real shower.”

Wes and I watched another movie until the bus came to a stop.

“I should go back to my bus. But I’ll see you when we get to the venue. Do you want to get dinner again?”

Sue looks our way at the mention of dinner.

“Sure.”

“I’ll find us a place.”

“Okay.”

“Want to come with me while I have a cigarette?”

“Yeah.” I nod.

We step off the bus, and he lights a cigarette.
