I exit the bathroom and head to the lobby. I look around for Wes but I don’t see him, so I figured I finished before him. I back myself in a corner so I can see the restrooms and wait for him to come out.

“Abbey?” I hear from the side. “Abbey Dark.” It’s coming from a girl. I fight the urge to turn to look because, most likely, it’s some fan. “Is that you?”

She walks in front of me now. I vaguely recognize who this girl is. She is tall, with a big set of tits and a nose that you just know was made through surgery, but she is still beautiful. She has some curves to her. She has blonde hair that hangs just past her shoulders and blue eyes. She is wearing a red miniskirt and a black collared shirt. She has on these heels that make her look even taller.

“Hi.” I say softly, wishing I could remember why she looks so familiar. And wishing Wes would come out and save me.

“Haley Adams.” She stretches her hand to me. I take it and shake it. “And you know Alan.” She points to the side of her, and sure enough, it’s Alan fromEpic Tale. Alan is the asshole who punched a hole in my dressing room wall once, because I wouldn’t let him fuck my ass.

And, of course, she is Wes’s ex. The one he wrote a bunch of songs about. The one who broke his heart. He said he was crazy for her. And she is standing here, looking hot as hell, and much better than me. With that guy. This is going to suck. Strike that. This is going to beawkward.

“Yes.” I say. “Uh, nice to meet you.”

“Are you here with someone?” She asks.

“Uh.” I stall. Do I mention Wes? “Yeah.”

“It’s like impossible to get a table huh?”

“I…” I pause. “I actually already ate. I’m just waiting for my friend.” I say the word friend quietly.

“How have you been?” Alan asks me.

“I’ve been good.” I say. “You?”

“Great.” He smiles and puts his arm around Haley. She seems a bit taken aback by this but leans against him anyway.

“I think we should just give up. There's no sense in wasting our night hoping we eventually get a table. Are you and your friend off to anywhere after this? Maybe we could tag along. The more, the merrier, they say.”

“I don’t know.”

“Abbey.” Wes walks up behind me, his voice making me jump a little. “I was just… oh.” He pauses. “Haley.” He says her name slowly.

“Wes.” She smiles at him. She steps away from Alan and gives him a half hug, and he remains motionless. “It’s so good to see you. This is Alan. He plays guitar inEpic Tale.”

“I know who he is. Hey.” Wes waves at the unwelcome intrusion. “Abbey and I were just leaving.”

“Yeah. She told me you guys already ate. We have decided to give up trying to get a table. Where are you two off to? Maybe we could tag along.”

“I don’t really think that’s a good idea.” His voice is solid and plain, leaving no room for arguing.

“Oh, come on, don’t be like that.” She uses her hand to push him back slightly, shoving at him playfully. He barely moves. His face is emotionless, and I think that makes this all worse.

“I’m not being any way. Abbey and I just have our own plans. You and Alan have a good night.” His hand touches the small ofmy back, and he pushes me gently towards the exit. “Nice seeing you.”

“But, Wes. Wait. I was wondering.” She steps after us. Wes just guides me through the door. She follows us outside, Alan behind her. “I was just wondering if you could get us backstage passes for one of the shows. I just need four passes.”

Wes isn’t looking at her, nor at me. He is just staring into the street.

“Please. For old-time’s sake. I’d like to see you play.” She grovels when Wes doesn’t reply to her earlier comment.

“Abbey, maybe we should let them chat.” Alan pipes up, his voice as unwelcome as his new girlfriends had been. Wes makes a face at that. The whole situation went from uncomfortable to downright horrible in 2.8 seconds.

“Who?” Wes grinds out suddenly.

“Who?” Haley questions, confused about his meaning.

“You need four passes, for who?” He repeats slowly, like she is bad at comprehending basic questions.
