“Alan, Sarah, Jill, and myself.”

“Fine. I will put you on the list.”

“Thank you.” Haley grins happily and throws her arms around him.

“Yeah.” He shrugs her off. “Don’t mention it. Abbey.” He holds out his hand for me. I give him my hand. He grips it. “Let’s go.”

“You sure we can’t tag along?” Haley pipes up, like we would want her to go anywhere with us. I guess Wes’s voice timbre isn’t clear enough.

“Don’t push it, Haley.” He spits out, annoyance rolling from him.

“Fine.”

Wes starts to pull me away.

“Bye.” I force a small smile, giving a small wave.

“Bye.” Alan says, poor guy. I kind of feel sorry for him.

“See you tomorrow.” Haley smiles like we are excited about that.

I haveto walk fast to keep pace with Wes, who hasn’t said a word since we left Alan and Haley a few blocks back.

“Wes.” I finally speak up. “Wes. Please. I’m wearing heels.”

He drops my hand and stops walking. He looks at me. “Sorry, I didn’t realize how fast I was walking.”

“You’re angry.”

“I don’t know what I am. That Alan guy is an asshole.”

“I know.”

“You know him.”

“Yes.” I agree softly, and he nods his head.

“Of course, she knew I would be in town, probably saw the headlines of us together, and just had to find an ex of yours to drag along.”

“Not really an ex. We just went on a few dates.” I leave out the fact he punched a wall because I wouldn’t let him fuck my ass because, clearly, Wes is not in the right mood to hear that.

“Fuck. I’m sorry.”

“Want to skip dancing?”

“No, let’s not let them ruin our night. I know a good club just about a block away.” His voice is soft and gentle.

“Okay.”

He holds out his hand for mine again, and I give it to him. He entwines our fingers, lighting a cigarette with his free hand, before we start walking again.

I can’t help but feel off, though. Did he still have feelings for Haley? She seemed to be able to get under his skin easily. Was he thinking about her now? Did she do this kind of thing a lot? Find him and coerce him into getting her passes and stuff?

She is so much prettier than me and way more perky. She seems happy, friendly, and stable. She didn’t seem to care about what other people thought of her. Her tits are bigger than mine, that’s for sure. She is stunning and bright. She is quite the opposite of me. Confident in all the ways I am not.

“Wes?” I ask after a few minutes. He bends to put out his cigarette, dropping my hand.
