“Grilled Salmon.” I try not to slur. “And sticky toffee pudding for dessert.”
“I think she earned herself a few hours on my bus during the next drive.”
“What she earned herself is something to soak up some of that alcohol.” She grabs the menu from the desk. “What do you want?”
“Sleep.”
“A club sandwich?” She continues like I didn’t say anything.
“Pancakes.” Wes adds in.
“Pancakes?” I ask, looking at him in shock. Where did that come from?
“Pancakes and bacon.”
Sue looks at me. “A stack of pancakes and two pieces of bacon.” She agrees with a smile.
“And what do I get?”
“You can spend a few hours on his bus during the next drive.” She says, rolling her eyes.
“Deal.”
Sue orders us pancakes and bacon from room service while Wes excuses himself to the bathroom.
“Is he staying the night?” Sue questions me.
“Yes.” I answer, getting another mini bottle of vodka.
“No.”
“Yes. He can stay the night.” I challenge.
“Yes. But no more drinking.” She points to the bottle in my hand. “If you throw up, it’s no more hotel room and no time on his bus.” I set the bottle down. “Do you need more condoms?”
“No.” I shake my head.
“Still just friends?”
I nod.
“Whatever you say.” She shakes her head.
Wes comes out of the bathroom. “I can watch her, Sue.”
“I’ll stay.” She sits at the little table in the room.
The food comes a few minutes later. Sue sets out two plates of pancakes and two plates of bacon. I take a seat in front of one of them as Wes sits in front of the other.
“Syrup?” Sue asks.
I go to say no, but Wes cuts me off. “You have to have syrup. It’s the best part.”
I nod my head, and Sue pours some syrup over my pancakes before passing the container to Wes.
I didn’t really think this through. I’m still full from dinner and dessert and now I was going to have to get through three pancakes and two pieces of bacon? I regret this deal. I know I’m going to disappoint Wes because there is no way I could eat all three pancakes.
But I have to try.
