“I don’t want you to see me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Pathetic. Who is scared of a fucking number on a scale?”

“A lot of people. It’s really not that uncommon to be worried about your weight. Maybe you are more worried than others, but most girls worry about their weight. Most girls hate scales. It’s not pathetic.”

“I will probably have a full-blown panic attack.”

“Hey, I’m good at helping with those.” He smiles.

“You are, but I would like to do this alone.”

“Well, if you change your mind, I’ll be there in a heartbeat.”

“Are you going to leave?”

“I’m thinking of running back to my bus to change, but I’ll come right back. Or maybe you could come with me.” He takes a sip of his coffee. “Maybe we can convince Sue since you ate not one but two breakfasts. I think it’s the least she could do.”

“You ask her.” I laugh. “She seems to like you better.”

“You should probably eat all of it then.” I look down. I’m almost done with it anyway. I nod and shovel in the last few bites. He smiles as I eat them, taking bites of his own food.

“Look at you go.” His lips turn up into a smile when I finish eating. He takes another sip of his coffee and then gets up. “Let’s go see if we can get something out of your hard work.”

He swings open the door, leaving it open behind me. I follow him out into the hall. He knocks on Sue’s door, and she opens it after a moment.

“Hello, Wesley.” She greets.

“I’m wondering if it would be possible for Abbey to come back with me to my bus to grab a couple of things before we start working on our song.”

“Did she eat her breakfast?”

“She ate two breakfasts. The bagel you brought her and eggs and toast with me.”

“All of it?”

“All of it.” He agrees, smiling proudly.

“Fine.” She agrees after a long moment of staring at me. “But don’t be too long.”

“You got it.” Wes smiles.

“Thank you.” I say.

She just nods her head and closes the door.

Wesand I exit the car where the buses have parked, across the street from the venue where we are playing tonight. He puts his arm around my shoulder as we walk to his bus. Swinging open the door and helping me climb the steps up.

“Look what the cat dragged in.” Dennis says from the couch, where he is playing a video game with Aaron.

“What’s up?” Wes says, walking past him. He takes my hand and drags me with him.

“Not a whole lot.” Dennis says. “Where did you end up last night?”

“Abbey got a hotel room.”
