Damon Penmayne appears.

And he doesn’t just appear, he seeminglyemergesout of the darkness like some kind of vampire. Out of the shadows like some kind of demon...

And straight into our confrontation.

He doesn’t say a thing.

Neither Luke nor I have the briefest of moments to even process what is happening before Damon slams into Luke, pushing the former quarterback against his own car with the slightest of ease. The noise of Luke crashing into the car reverberates around the quiet streets of Crystal River. All six-foot-plus of my ex crumbles in front of my eyes as his body is flung around by the man who held me in custody not even six weeks ago.

And then I’m screaming.

“What the hell are you doing, Damon?”

Damon doesn’t even look at me.

He doesn’t evenacknowledgeme.

He simply walks past me and straight up to Luke lying in a sprawled mess on the ground. I can just make out that my ex is still conscious but groaning in pain as Damon leans over him with a burning snarl.

“Take me to your family home, Luke,” the crime boss sneers in a near whisper.

My ex merely lets out another groan. I can’t believe how easily Damon knocked down the star quarterback. Damon is so fucking strong.

But what is he doing here, and why does he want to go to Luke’s family house?

“Take me to your home, Luke. Right now.”

There’s another groan from Luke instead of anything approaching articulation.

“Lay off it,” I exclaim to Damon. “Can’t you see he’s hurt? You threw him against the freaking car.”

But the man doesn’t care, and he doesn’t listen to me. Instead, Damon reaches for Luke, grabbing his arm and forcibly pulling him to his feet with no regard for what the former quarterback might be feeling.

“Show me the way to your family home, Luke Abbott.”

My ex is struggling to speak from the shock. He only makes out a few words.

“What... why...”

“Leave him alone,” I say to Damon, but he still doesn’t pay me any attention. “What are you doing? Why are you here? What do you want from Luke?”

Still not even a look my way from the crime boss.

Damon pulls Luke around the car, taking him away from me.

But I follow behind as the two men shuffle into thedarkness. I’m not going to give up on this. Damon must think I’m crazy if I’m just going to let him carry Luke away to doGod-knows-whatto him.

Damon notices I’m close. He turns around. It’s the first time he has looked at me.

“Stay here, Ava,” he commands. “Don’t follow me.”

His voice is dark. Controlled. Menacing.

It’s a warning as much as a command.

I shake my head at that.

Hell no to that.
