“Wherever you’re taking him, I’m going,” I reply.

Damon says nothing to that.

I continue to follow them as Damon forces Luke around the corner and toward his own parked car.

He must’ve been following me tonight if he’s parked so close. He must have been waiting for us to leave the restaurant. He was waiting to strike. But what does he want to do with my ex?

I’m worried about what Damon is planning to do with my ex. A million scenarios race through my head as we make our way to his car. Is he actually going to kill Luke? I wouldn’t put it past him. And why does he want Luke to take him to his family home? What’s that all about?

I am so fucking confused.

With his spare hand, Damon opens his passenger car door and forces Luke inside the vehicle. In response, I open the back passenger door and slide inside as well. Luke is groaning and still not making out any recognizable words.

Damon gives me a hard look as I strap myself into the backseat. He clearly doesn’t want me here, but he can’t do a damn thing about it. I am going to be here, no matter what happens. I am not going to wait behind and leave Luke to Damon’s violent hands.

Whatever he’s got planned for Luke, I’ll be here to witness it.

“Have you been following me?” I ask him when he finally sits in the driver’s seat and ignites the engine. “What are you doing here tonight? Were you waiting for Luke and me? I can’t believe you would do that to him. I told youno violence. I wanted you out of my life, and here you are - breaking your word yet again.”

“You should be thanking me for saving you from this boy,” Damon mutters under his breath.

“Nope,” I reply. “Not in a million years. I’m capable of handling myself.”

“Right.”

“I wanted you to leave me alone. Forever,” I say to the man’s reflection in the rearview mirror. “So why are you back here for me?”

“I am not here for you, Ava,” Damon says coolly. “I’m here for Luke’s father.”

And that makes me silent.

Luke’s father?

What the hell?

DAMON

Eugene Abbott hasn’t changedin all the years since I last saw him on the worst day of my life.

He’s still the same man whose face is permanently etched on my memory.

I burst through the door of Luke’s family home, located not far from the restaurant where he’s taken Ava on that pathetic so-calleddate. It was a short drive with the boy strapped in next to me and Ava sitting in the back seat. She’s completely confused over what I’m doing – and I don’t blame her for wanting to know what the hell’s happening – but I have a lot more problems to deal with right now than to stop and explain myself to her. She thinks I’m going to beat up her shitty ex-boyfriend for some perceived slight or something, but I have no care for Luke Abbott when it’s his father I’m truly after.

I hold the brat’s shirt collar tightly as I make my dramatic announcement into the house, scanning around for the man I’ve come here for: the brat’s very own father.

I don’t have to search for long.

Eugene Abbott is sitting on the couch, watching some football game on TV, when I come crashing in. His head swivels toward me, a look of pure surprise on his face.

That same face I saw all those years ago.

Yeah, he still looks exactly the same as I remember…

I’ve been darkly curious as to whether the man would even recall my face from the last time we saw each other, but the instant recognition in his eyes when he sees me confirms it pretty damn quickly.

I snarl at the sight of the man.
